"Industrial Revolutions" In A Different Light?
"Why
waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be
getting better? Why hide deficiencies instead of overcoming them? Why
look for friends or partners who will just shore up your self-esteem
instead of ones who will also challenge you to grow? And why seek out
the tried and true, instead of experiences that will stretch you? The
passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially)
when it's not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This
is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most
challenging times in their lives."
-Carol S. Dweck

This quotation aligns with the approach and message on the Industrial revolution video because with our development of our individuality we need to accept fear in order to embrace change. I personally think that Dweck's quotation insightfully conveys the aspect that we are all focusing on the aspects on our self and our reality by focusing of the easy way through life instead on the growth and potential that we could become. This thinking is essential for the growth and health on our mindset.
I can't say that I have ever been bogged down in what I am good at. Personally, and in my experience with other talented people, everybody seems to be a bit overly conscious of the ways that they are not as good as their idols. It's one of the ways that I push myself to improve. I will also say, that personally I get no satisfaction from being static in a talent. I will not enjoy it nearly as much if I feel stagnant and like I'm not improving. It is a constant drive to make myself better.
This quote goes really well with attitude and approach. If we approach our daily lives trying to please others and be what they want you to be then you will never be truly happy and will never find ones true self. This also goes along with trying new things that have not been done and finding out the truth in the unknown. This kind of thinking is really good for self betterment. This way of thinking isn't always popular but it is important.
I agree with this quote because it doesn't make sense as to why someone would be around things that bring them down. The video we watched in class is on a biker that does crazy tricks. He followed his dreams and probably didn't let people bring him down. I think in order to be successful in life you have to worry about yourself more than others to some extent. If you are constantly around people that don't support you than you will start to believe what they are saying. Overall, it is important to surround yourself with positivity.
I can’t say that the “Industrial Revolutions” video had much to do with the quote in itself. Of course, the talented bicyclist needed to continue to try new and more incredible courses in order to further improve his skill, which required a growth mindset. However, in the video, it does not appear to show him getting particularly better throughout the video. One could even say he is just showing off his talents, or as Dweck calls it, “proving over and over how great you are.” The bicyclist’s journey to get to this point certainly required a growth mindset, constantly looking to achieve more, but the video we are focusing on didn’t show much growth in itself.
This quotation has to do with the industrial revolution because if we had been proud of our achievements before, the industrial revolution would have never happened. Without a sense of humility, no one would be able to succeed. People had a sense of humility during the industrial revolution, and it helped to change society.
The guy with his bike does what he does because he loves it not because of the paycheck or making others happy. He is focused on self improvement by showing others his actions and not just telling people how good his is. He is always doing new tricks and trying new things instead of getting a curtain skill and sticking with it.
Dweck's quote basically implies the idea of how important it is to just live in the moment and work on improving who you are as an individual instead of dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. I think the quote does very much relate to the subject of the video and the message he is portraying. He is living in the moment and all he is focusing on is riding his bike. I think both the quote and the video portray the same message of staying in the present and how important it is to do so. This idea is very relatable to our society today with how it can be so hard to stay in the current and not worry about what happened or may happen. But in the end, I think it is so important to stay in the present and both texts promote that.
I think this quote is really inspiring because it proves a point that a lot of people approach difficulties and back off when instead we should focus on overcoming and becoming better. If we never get out of our comfort zone then we can never advance in the ways that we need to. This is like in the video how he is performing dangerous stunts that a lot of people wouldn't ever try.
I think this quote is pretty inspiring, because it says that when we come across difficulties, normally we just put that aside, and hide from it. Rather what we should be doing is fighting against those difficulties. Just like in the video, he fails to go over an obstacle, but then it switches to him completing that obstacle. Even the best of us, he could be considered a “biker pro.” But he still tried, and eventually beat it. A lot of people look at that and see that what he does is really hard, but if you try hard enough, and your passionate enough, you can do the same thing.
I think this quote is very applicable to our lives today. With the current technology and social standards it is easy to skate by in life. It is easy to live your life going through the motions or behind a screen. It is hard to self reflect on places in my life where I am underachieving, because there are are many. It is so much easier and “safer” to do what you have always done and just do the minimum. But is that really living your life? While I don’t think it is realistic to have a growth mindset in every aspect of our lives, it is a goal to work towards during our entire life. If we can begin to shift just parts of our mindset into growth it will make all the difference in the world.
By having a growth mindset people are more likely to better traits like attitude, approach, passion, and message. In the video, the man who rode the bicycle did crazy things and kept building new things to better his bicycling skills. I believe that having a growth mindset allows us to try different things and better ourselves. I am going to try and continue to stretch myself to try new things so that I can strengthen some of the traits listed above.
I believe that the quotation by Carol S. Dweck aligns with all aspects of attitude, approach, passion, and the overarching message from the video we viewed in class- Industrial Revolutions. The video- Industrial Revolutions was not filled with commentary or nonsense babbling, but simply a person doing what he does best, not explaining this and that and oh I am usually better, but instead just doing it. I think sometimes people in this generation believe that oh if I just use my incorrect words and exaggerate myself I will be considered superior, although I can’t do what I am saying. Your actions speak much louder than your words you may portray to your acquaintances. The quote by Dweck needs to be heard by everyone, because it is important that we simply do rather than talk, talk, talk. Let you actions speak for your words, not excuses.
This quotation aligns with the with the message conveyed in the video, “Industrial Revolutions,” because this video is all about taking risks and pushing the boundaries. In the quote it says “why seek out the tried and true, instead of experiences that stretch you?” The whole video is about Danny Macaskill pushing the boundaries to the next level and pushing himself to be the best he can be. All the tricks and things he does are on the edge of death, but he still pushes the envelope and accomplishes them to “stretch the experiences” he creates for himself while allowing him to face challenges and grow as a person. Taking risks is about not being afraid to fail, and even sometimes letting yourself fail so you can learn from your mistakes and know what to do better next time. The message I took away from this video is how this applies to real life. If you don’t take risks, try new things, and strive to be the best version of yourself you can be, your never going to reach your full potential and be successful in life. You can’t be afraid to fail otherwise you won’t give 100% effort in anything you do and do everything half asked, rather than being fearless and going after what you want.
I believe that this quote holds a deep meaningful meaning. In life, if you just live on the safe side you wont be able to live your life so to speak. How do you live when you don't do anything? You have to be able to learn to bounce back from your mistake and know not to go back.
The quote and the video aligns because they both talk about taking risks and find what makes you happy. In the video the biker is pushing boundaries and doing things on two wheels that most people can not do on two feet. This connects to the quote because the quote states " why seek out he tried and true, instead of experiences that stretch you?". They both are trying to show that without pushing the boundaries and without taking risks you will never find out what makes you happy. If the biker never to the risk of picking up the bike he would have never found what makes him happy, or if the writer never picked up the pen she would have never found out her love for weighting and putting her opinion out there. So I think they are connected because both of their messages are to take risks and then you will find what makes you happy.
This quotation relates to the video "Industrial Revolutions" by talking about taking risks and going out of your comfort zone to create great experiences. I have been watching Danny Macaskill for a while now along with many other athletes of the Red Bull community and they all push the boundaries of what most people would consider reality.
This quote aligns with the industrial revolutions video because the idea of progress is prevalent in both of them. Throughout our live we have many times when we can pursue or dreams and push ourselves or turn away and accept what we have. In most peoples lives they have times when they choose to turn away, accept their life, and not strive to be better. However, people like Danny Macaskill almost always choose to progress, choose to grow and choose to become better in their lives.

Humans have a need to be liked. We have a need to feel like we have purpose in the world, so we tend to look for people around us to validate our existence. Also, looking for happiness in the validity of other people, or looking for self-motivation in the people around us is not a bad thing. It can become excessive to the point where one can feel pointless without these people, but there can be a healthy balance. Having people around you to "boost your self esteem" or having people that don't challenge you isn't a bad thing. If you are able to use that self esteem to challenge yourself, then you can improve yourself and your skills
I agree with Dweck that with the growth mindset, one will certainly learn to grow and become a better more efficient person. However, I think it is unrealistic to expect humans to do all of the items listed in her quote. People need a sense of assurance and humans also need to feel good about themselves. If someone is constantly pushed to be better and better they could develop a sense of worthlessness, that whatever they do is not good enough. I think doing the things she quotes can be helpful, but if that is all someone does, they will end up feeling worse about themselves and live a life full of too much pressure and too high of expectations.
In the video “Industrial Revolutions” it showed a man doing the near impossible on his bike. He did these crazy tricks and super dangerous stunts on his bike, and one would think that he is a master, the best of the best. But in the video we see him fail at some of the tricks he does, but we also see him try them over and over again. We seem he succeed. And he doesn't try just one trick but like 20 or more. He really pushes himself and as Carol Dweck would say, he has a growth mindset. He is always striving to be better and push himself. I think that both the video and Dweck's challenge are very inspiring and that kind of mindset they talk about is the kind of mindset that the famous intellectuals, we aspire to be like, have. I really think that this type of thinking is beneficial to all people. I know I strive to have a growth mindset especially when I play volleyball.
The quotation displayed ties directly to the video we watched because of the extreme effort it would take to accomplish such skillful use with a bike. Without a doubt, behind the scenes of this video is a dozens on dozens of failed attempts, as well as many bruises scratches and possibly broken bones. He also had to start small at one point and develop to where he is today. His passion is unbroken and unwavering, resulting in a growth mindset so well founded that he has the ability to try and try despite the frustration that undoubtedly came with his goal.
This quotation relates to the video "Industrial Revolutions" by talking about taking risks and going out of your comfort zone to create great experiences. I have been watching Danny Macaskill for a while now along with many other athletes of the Red Bull community and they all push the boundaries of what most people would consider reality.
To me, I think that the quote reflects the mindset of the man in the video, Industrial Revolutions, because he has the mindset that he shouldn't just try the easy tricks, but rather he should try to push himself to new limits. This allows him to find more skills that he didn't even know he had before, allowing him to impress people even more than he did before. Also, although it isn't shown as much in the film, they did hint that he did fall on many of the attempts, which show us that even though he seems to be flawless in his tricks, it takes a lot more work that it seems. This pushes him to be even better, to a point where he can do hard tricks without slipping a single time.
I think this quote is a reminder that everybody has to start somewhere. It's really sad to see people who won't try anything because they don't want to fail. In order to be great, you have to put yourself out there and find a passion and a motive and something to put yourself into. I think my favorite part of he video we watched was seeing the biker mess up on his bike, but then do the trick over again perfectly. That shows that even the best and greatest will have to work as hard.
In the video, there was this guy doing awesome tricks on his bicycle. Usually in these types of videos, the people would cut out them making mistakes so it looks like they did that all perfectly. What I enjoyed about this video was that he did add in some of his mistakes. But then he would show the complete version. This is cool because it shows us that even the pros make mistakes and the only way to overcome mistakes is to keep on trying until you succeed. In the quote, my favorite line is “Why waste time proving over and over how great you are, when you could be getting better?” People spend time telling someone else on how great they are at something, when they could be taking that time to practice more.
This quote makes me think about mistakes, and how they are a necessary part of development. Nothing's perfect right off the bat, everything has room for improvement. Hard work and corrections make it possible for growth, and even possible for perfection in anything you do. You alone have the power to make your life the way you want it to be.
Within Industrial Revolutions the main theme was to show off skill and growth, this was emphasized by the tone and pacing of the video, where in, he shows improvement from other videos of his, where before he would have taken the safe route, now he will take the more experimental route. In the quote it says, "Why show over and over again how good you are, instead of getting better?" and this emphasizes the point of the Industrial Revolutions video, as he has improved and changed what he does rather than take the safe route, he takes the more experimental, and he does show his skill over and over again, however he does show his imperfections and improvements along side his skill.
With the quote it kind of tells us that improvement comes when we practice, that we shouldn't just stop when we fail. But to push our selves for the harder stuff instead of taking the easy route. With practice and working constantly on what we want to succeed in that will allow us to grow. The video shows this guy that instead of doing easy tricks pushed himself for the harder tickets and worked on them until he got them down. We can do anything if we have the mindset to do it.
Dweck's quote states that rather than constantly trying to better yourself for the sole purpose of being better than others, you should try and improve whatever skill/trait/talent you're trying to improve for yourself and because you really want to. The skills portrayed in the video are, like with just about any skill, achieved only through practice. The cyclist helps send home the point of Dweck's quote, showing to the viewer that if you really do seek betterment for yourself and put your mind to it, you will be able to achieve greatness.
In the video it shows the guy on the bike making mistakes which I think makes the video have a very deep meaning. In everyones life they are going to make mistakes but those don't matter if you keep trying and improve and get better until things that were challenging are easy now.
The video shows that if you make mistakes that's perfectly okay to learn you must be willing to take the risks that help you grow and if you fail get back up again and keep try again because the only way to learn anything is to get outside of your comfort zone and try it. How do you think the greats Albert Einstein, Shakespeare, Tom Brady, and Mozart got to where they were/are they didn't do it by staying in their comfort zone. Always remember you miss 100% of the shots you take.
The video shows the pure determination and perseverance of someone who is passionate about something, and willing to succeed. Despite our ability as humans to make mistakes and fail, the biker continues to push boundaries and take risks. Simply watching the video, the audience can observer and assume that the biker has fallen or failed while trying to explore his passion. This video gives the audience a source of inspiration to start somewhere, despite the possibility of failure or mistakes. I believe that failing and making mistakes allows us as human beings to grow and educate ourselves about possible positive or negative outcomes.
