Seeing the photo of the solider carrying the American Flag. It shows the way the valued idea of Patriotism in American culture. That photo represented the undying faith in the idea of being a free american living in a free country.

I observed a lot of poverty and struggle. Many people were struggling in this time period and the pictures give you a better image, of what it was like in that day & age

I saw lots of events in American history that changed how our country works. The images made me feel that America isn't perfect but people are always trying to make it a better place. These events shapes American life because it shows what we've gained and lost in these pictures and how our lives are impacted by that. I think these pictures are almost the definition American history because it shows our accomplishments and setbacks. These pictures help me understand what it means to be American because it means everybody has their own rights and that everyone will fight for what they believe in.

I saw that majority of the images were of tragic, powerful, and important events. A lot of the pictures showed poverty and struggle. In some way they all show sacrafice for all other Americans.

The photos vary throughout american history, and display a wide variety of moods and themes. Some photos portray the great depression, giving a more "depressing" vibe where as the photos taken in the 1960s are more bright and lively. The history of the United States could solely be told from photographs, that is just the moral of the american story.

I observed a unity in some pictures, a sense of safety and home. The main picture I had seen this on was one where there were people from different countries and it had looked like that they were coming to America. However, in other pictures, there is a sense of fear. There is a picture of a man that looks like he is alone and cold, and he may be living on the streets. I feel like America has lost a sense of unity. The unity and the excitement to be here. To live here is a dream for many in the world and something so many of those who live here take for granted. -Katie H.

Based off of the pictures placed around the room I observed much emotion in each and every photo I observed. This made me realize how much America has changed and developed. Just walking around, I could see how hard it was for soldiers, kids, and parents around the world. That still does apply to us present day but not as brudle. One picture in particular, there is a soldier laying ontop of a sand bunker in the pouring rain. This goes to show how harsh the conditions were and still could be. Overall the pictures made me realize like I said before, with time we develop and grow. I think our society in particular thrives on growth in numerous ways just like back then and to this day.

Today I saw some really powerful images. I observed people watching the very first 3D movie. It’s interesting for me to see that because I can watch 3D movies whenever I want, but back then, this was the first time they were available. Before that day, those people had no idea what it would be like to watch movies in 3D. That was a huge technological advance in society and since then, we have continued to advance and improve our technology. While we have some amazing technologies today, I'm excited to see what will be invented in the future and I'm sure the people in this picture were excited too.

Based off the images I seen, I noticed that a lot of people were segregated, meaning every race was with each other never mixing together. I also noticed that there was a lot of protest back then which may have caused conflict between people in that time. One last thing I also notice were there were colored fountains meaning colored people had to drink out of a specific water fountain.

In all of the photos most things that were shown were of public movements, war, and cultural phenomenons. I do think that these photos embody the spirit of America. America is always changing in all sorts of different ways. Whether it be America is changing through movements such as the March on Selma, or we are changing culturally through our clothing styles. Violence is also a part of America in my opinion. America has taken part in many wars such as the Vietnam war and World War 2. It changed America and the people in it, it made the people proud of America and it also made people rethink what the American spirit should be like. The reason why these photos capture the American spirit so well is because these photos embody change and America is always changing and it always wants to change for the better.

I observed many photos of Pilgrims outside their wagons. In the photo they looked tired and ready to settle in the new land. Photos about the Great Depression make me feel sad and help me understand the hardship that the families went through. I also observed photos of the military defending our country. Those photos help me understand what it means to be American because we have many rights and are free. They make me feel proud to be an American.

Over and over again I observed the spirit of the American people. Many of these pictures showed people continuing to preserve and stand up for what they believe in. These people shaped the American life because they fought for what they believed in which encouraged many people to follow in their footsteps. Lastly we have gained so many things from all of these pictures. By abolishing segregation and slavery, we have gained equality and freedom for everyone.

Overall after admiring all of the images, I have very mixed emotions. Some of the images make me very proud and honored to be an American. The images of the soldiers fighting and risking their lives to protect ours are extremely empowering. You can see the blood, sweat, and tears throughout the soldiers and their surroundings. With the feeling of pride I also am sad looking at some of these images. The images of 9/11 and all of the lives lost that day are very emotional and hard to look at. Also the images of people who are homeless and lacking essential life needs are also hard to see. In my opinion, taking care of our people is the most important thing and these images make me feel disappointed in our country and people. As a country these images just show how much we’ve progressed and how much knowledge we truly have. Along with the positive improvements the images also show the setbacks and harsh times. Which are hard to see. These images tell a story of America! It’s honoring to be able to see these amazing accomplishments but also saddening to realize the amounts of lives have been lost.

These photos show us what American has gained/ lost in these movements through feelings, body language, and even everyday activities. In most pictures about war or after a big event has happened, lots of emotion is shown. In one particular picture of soldiers praying for another fallen one in war, all of them look like they are either yelling in sadness that this is happening or crying because they have to go through this so often. In everyday life, school kids can sit there all looking with fright because of what is currently going on in the war aspect. America has lost some hope maybe because there are so many casualties and gained respect for fighting in what they believe.

Photos that were scattered around the room depicted both great happiness and a perfect representation of the American spirit, whereas other photos showed pain and horrible moments in history. Some photos showed the tragedies of 9/11 where others showed pictures of young boys waiting to play baseball, which was a popular game at the time. Each picture showed a different story and each picture had a different emotion connected to it. I observed photos that were fun of protests and trying to create a happier world to live in, but I also saw pictures of death and tragedy. Moments in history have truly impacted our society in both good and bad ways. There are amazing moments of protest change, where others show our worst moments in history.

The photo I witnessed was a very simple photo of a average american family in front of a house with a car, two beautiful children, and a mom and a dad. I believe this photo is trying to resemble what the American Dream looks like it also resembles what America is supposed to look like. Simple, Easy, Happy, That’s the American Dream, that’s all everyone dreams of just a simple beautiful life when really we are being blinded by the real world around us.

Based upon the images we viewed in class, one image that really stood out to me was an image during the civil rights movement in Birmingham, Alabama. The image displays firemen blasting people with a very high-pressure water stream from a fire hose, this even knocked people to the ground and caused harm to people. This image makes me feel powerless towards certain people and it makes me feel fear even though I was not around during this time period. This time period helped many people gain more overall respect as they live their everyday life. The civil rights movement is a big movement in our history which really changed a lot for America. These images, but this one in specific really helped me understand more about our country and its history.

Like all countries, America has been shaped by a history of successes and challenges. Over the decades, the country has been faced by: economic depression, war, and internal issues. While terrible, these struggles helped define the identity of the country by giving people the chance to rise up against them. In each instance of this occurring, lives have been lost, but a vital message was eventually conveyed in exchange.

I noticed that the photos that we looked at all depicted scenes of either people facing problems, overcoming them, or achieving something great. All of these traits that were observed reflect the American spirit, which appears to be to face and overcome problems and to achieve great things despite them. Another part of the American spirit that the photos embodied was the flexible way in which Americans can work; both individually and as a team with others in order to achieve something.

Many of the pictures were of things that happened in the past within america, some tragic and others phenomenal. This sort of shows us a bit on how we got here today, like how the protests helped us to keep a more open mind, and the other photos showing us our progression towards the technology that we incorporate throughout our daily lives, and then showing us the american spirit and what many people stand for. These images all come together to show us how many events have shaped our current american life.

(The cotton pickers picture) I’ve noticed three or four cotton pickers in Bells, Texas. This was happening in the 1900s. I am wondering how often do they have to pick cotton, because we have talked about this a little in U.S. history. What was the point? I observed that people who were young were out there picking cotton in the fields for the day. They have to work hard in order to harvest in cotton which was used for treatment of the spinning machinery. This shows what America was like back in the 1900s and during the Industrial Revolution.

What Have we lost from these American movements and events?
What have we gained?
How do these make you feel?

These pictures made me feel annoyed because I was shocked America was once as bad as these pictures show. There was war, millions of homeless people living in shelters, segregation, violence, discrimination, unequal rights, and more. Many of the pictures showed discrimination. People were discriminated on race, gender, and work. People lost their rights because of discrimination. Many of the pictures also showed war. People lost their lives while fighting for freedom. Although we have lost lives and battles, we have also gained freedom and other things. America has gained women's rights, a better economy, discrimination laws, and more. The pictures made me realize that America has come a long way economically, socially and politically. These Pictures show how America was able to learn new ideas to help better society.

The picture of the plane with everyone standing around smiling and cheering fully represents the innovation of America. The joyful faces are contagious. While many of the pictures showed rough times of people in poverty this one stood out to me since it was so positive. I think a lot of days the negative news and history is louder than the positive. I feel like people forget the good times in the past. This captures one of those positive moments so I find it particularly beautiful.

These images represent the culture of our American celebrations and our setbacks. They illustrate what it means to be American through the connected nature of our country. Images of immense prosperity or of immense depression represent how all of America is affected by happenings in our country. For example, all of America prospered when suburbia boomed, but everyone suffered during the Great Depression. And images of 911 show that if one part of America is attacked, other parts stand up and step in to help each other. I think these images show how different America is from other countries, even though it has boundaries and people are divided from each other, we understand each other and what we are going through.

Most of the pictures showed the struggles America has gone through such as the civil rights movement, and wars but some showed some of the incredible achievements such as the advancements in technology and medicine. One of the photos showed a few people using these artificial respirators for patients who had lung problems and couldn’t breathe without this technology.

The images I walked around and saw made me feel lucky. They made me feel lucky because I have more than the people did back then. The pictures made me appreciate what I have. I also feel sad for the people during those times because their lifestyle was way different and more complicated. They did not have the internet we do. We can look up anything we want in a matter of seconds. For them I was way more difficult to look up anything, also it was very limited. Having all of the things we do now allow our future to be brighter.

What have we gained from these movements, invention, events, etc.
After looking around at these pictures I feel that we have gained a lot from what they show. From equal rights to keeping a free country and living the american dream. One photo shows MLK speaking at the washington monument about equality. This photo embodies the American spirit of living a free life. Free from racism and all other judgement. Another photo shows immigrants heading into a coal mine. They may not be American but they are working in the U.S. to try to make a living and be safe and free country.
How did it make me feel?
This made me feel lucky to have been born here without having to fight for the right to live here and be safe and secure in our country.

After looking at the pictures I feel like we have come very far in terms of solving problems and escalating the technology in the entertainment industry. Some problems that were in the pictures including war, and racism. Even though war is still a problem today we have not gone to catastrophe like during WWI and WWII and we are dealing with smaller wars like the war in Iraq and Afganistan. The problem with racism in still in present-day society but compared to the pictures I looked at what is happening now in the world is like a small grain of sand in the desert of the worst of the worst racism that plagued our country in the past. The pictures really made me give a sigh of relief that I was born without the problems of the past and that America is moving forward and solving many of the problems that make us who we are today.

In the picture I observed, I see four children with just their heads visible from sticking out of a what seems to be a wall. There are two nurses that might be reading something to the kids. The wall is an iron lung that is keeping the kids alive after the effects of Polio. This makes me feel sad and uncomfortable looking at the huge thing that the kids are hooked up too, but also glad that this thing is giving them life.

I observed many pictures of major events that happened that made history everywhere. With this major events, it can make or help people realize how this came to be. In the pictures you can see how it impacts lives mentally and physically to many people. Although some of the images may not seem familiar, you could kind of tell that it was an event that happened in the past.
