I believe the Puritans had many legacies that still live on today. They were important to American society because they influenced our culture. Similar to the Puritans, modern day society has a very hard working mindset and strong work ethic. The Puritans illustrated that a strong work ethic is necessary to create stability within society. Also, education has evolved from the Puritans because the Puritans believed everyone should be educated through the church. Education has now evolved into being outside of the church. Although there are many legacies of the Puritans I believe there are also things that should be critiqued and learned from them. The Puritans were violent, harsh, and believed everything was a sin. For good reason, the majority of Americans do not think this way today. In modern society, we have learned to not be as strict or violent because it leads to more dishonorable behavior as portrayed by Abby in The Crucible.
The Puritan era was a very important time in our history. Even today we still incorporate several Puritan ways into our lives and have eliminated some of there cruel punishments of the Puritans. Some of the ways Puritan culture is still shown throughout our modern day world in the American people. The Puritans were individuals who focused on their core values of hard work, self reliance, and simplicity. In our world not all Americans live like this but, there are several who do. Not only do people live with these core values they also live with these values through religion. Today and in Puritan society religion is a major component of mostly everyone's life. Religion is a certain way of life that sets guidelines as well as restrictions on an individual. Overall the core values of the Puritans and their religious beliefs are still shown in modern America. We also have learned multiple key lessons from the Puritans and thankfully have diminished some of the Puritan ways. These include the cruel punishments received for singing and the harsh pressure in the Puritan world. America isn’t nearly as harsh as the Puritan society and we have learned from the Puritan mistakes. Overall Puritanism was a crucial period in history where several lessons were learned and still seen today.
Even though the Puritan Era was very important for our history, only some of their lifestyle is around today. In todays society, we are definitely not as strict and serious with some beliefs as the Puritans. Though the biggest thing that I believe that is still around, is how hard some people work to get what they want. The Puritans was the perfect example of hard work, as their life was centered around it. Some people took a page from their book, as in todays society we have people working their butt off too. But the thing(s) that make us different are we do not have as harsh of punishments when we mess up. Also we are not as strict with our beliefs and our society is a lot more loosely ran. Overall, our society took some things from the Puritans, which were very important, but there was a lot of things we left behind too.
