What did you observe?
I observed a lot of U.S. history, many dealing with the civil rights movement, and both world wars.
How did the images make you feel?
These images reminded me of how long ago all this stuff actually happened. It wasn't too long ago when the world was at war, and people of color and women were fighting for basic human rights.
How do they shape the fabric of American life?
These events have helped shape America into one of the most accepting and freeing countries in the world, where background doesn't make a difference on the impacts you can make for yourself and the country.
Many of these photos that I saw could be considered tragedies that shaped what America is today. I saw the fallen hero's of 9/11, soldiers wading through swampy water in Vietnam, black people using a colored drinking fountain. These all are parts of history that impact how we handle things today and what our laws are. There were also good pictures. I saw a picture of walt Disney with Mickey mouse's shadow. Which shows the good times he brought almost every kid in America and the memories he made from his animations.
What did you observe? I observed that the life back then was much more blue colored, dirty, hard working people. From the pictures you can see how much different their jobs were and how hard they had to work.
How did the images make you feel? The image made me feel blessed to live in the time period we do. No electronics were invented then, you could not do the job you love, and it was a lot more gritty work too.
How do they shape the fabric of American life? It gave people the blue color idea of working hard. It was the beginnings of new technology, and would just shape the years to come in America
All of these photos were pretty sad and all seemed to be about how people in america who struggled to get the american dream. I think these all show the hard working gritty mentality that our country was built on. We have gone through some very tough times in the past but as a country we have persevered and become one of the best places in the world to live. A lot of these photos also show how diverse our country is and how it was built by immigrants coming to work hard to experience the american dream.
I saw a picture of a little boy marching down the street holding a sign that said "Children were not born to burn", The photo represented the little protection that the youth of America has. Even in our modern day America we lack protection for our children and students an example would be the massive increase in school shootings in the past two years. Our children and students should be able to feel safe and comforted where ever they go instead our nation has put fear into our children instead of hope. It's ironic how a photograph from so long ago could relate back to our modern day.
seeing some of the pictures made me feel like times have really changed Froom even the photo quality to cars, to churches, segragation was still a thing, KKK was heavy back then. building were built way different.
When I walked around and looked at the pictures, I mostly saw either very dirty, hungry people, or military things from around World War Two. To me, the images that I observed made me think of how in America, people can start from nothing and become something. These pictures don't show the American spirit because the American spirit is not being poor and sad, it's about making a name for yourself and living your best life.
Some photos show struggle and heartbreak, some show wonder and fascination. The American way is to go through any struggle you are facing and coming stronger. Also, the American way is to change and discover new things
As I looked around at the pictures, I noticed the amount of emotion portrayed in peoples faces and action. The images made me feel a lot of emotion. Some made me feel sad some made me feel happy. Things we have gained from the American moments are new inventions, now ideologies, and more advancements in many areas.
When I walked around and seeing all of the pictures, I made me think about what happened back then with all of the wars that were taking place and events. America changed over time and looking back at all of those pictures made me look at the events closer and the image to support them. I observed one picture of the Civil Rights Campaign. (America back in time), when Racism was still a thing. The civil rights campaign in Birmingham Alabama, or just the Civil Rights Movement in general, made me feel about how African Americans fought hard for their rights and all of the protests that were happening. We have gained rights for blacks and women. The feminist movement and the Civil rights movement made an impact on America.
In the images I observed a lot of fighting and soldiers. I felt like wars and conflicts among other nations was very prevalent and this is something that signifies our country. The facial expressions the soldiers portray are what stood out to me the most. Some were looking extremely brave but I feel like I could see the fear in each of there faces. These images made me feel a little sad but also very aware. This was a real time and real people who were having to experience this. Although we learn about history, we don't truly understand the civilian lives that were affected and these pictures allow us to see whats going on. I think these photos defiantly embody American spirit. Based on the picture and what time period is going on. These images give us insight on the normal American life at the time which is something that isn't seen that often.
I saw a picture of a group of boys just sitting in a classroom waiting for their uniforms for baseball. It shows the innocence and the happiness of the times in the 1950s. Even though it was not the best time in history, the picture is a picture of hope and excitement for baseball. These kids we just happy and couldn't wait to be able to be a kid. It feels like kids grow up way too soon now and it is scary. These kids were just kids.
Looking at all of the pictures I saw many different things, rough times in history such as attacks on the U.S. in tragedies, racism, and memorials for those that have fallen. Not all of them were bad either I saw a couple with good things, like shops from an older time, new inventions, and much more. Some of these images made me feel very sad about what happened, and others make me feel very happy and good. These all shape america because while we may have some trying times we do have many good times as well, and with everything bad something good will come after it as well.
Based upon the images I viewed, firemen and police officers in one image that look to be in distraught about what is happening, they are also carrying something with a flag atop. The images make me wonder what what is happening where we cannot see in the rest of the image. This image does embody the American spirit because I am predicting that a fellow firefighter/police passed away when helping America and they are having a ceremony type of remembrance to remember him. This does help us understand what it means to be an American because it shows respect to the ones who serve Americans and the United States.
There have been many times in American history where the mood and culture could simply be displayed in a photo. We observed a variety of photos ranging from the great depression to the "peak" of america. Overall, photos and literature are a great way to portray the ups and downs of our nation.
Some of the images that were placed around the classroom made me feel sad and upset. I was sad because of the way our country used to be. We were separate that upsets me. We have gained a lot from everything that has happened in this world. We have gained the most from the movement by the black people. That gave us the world we live in today that everyone is equal. I think these photos help me understand America because it shows what we have gone through to become the country we have become. We have gone through many hardships that break the hearts of the people, but through all of that, we have become the great country we are today.
One of the images that I saw was of a memorial built near the site of 9/11 twin tower attacks. This memorial was to a firefighter who died in the line of action, and the image made me feel empathy towards the firefighters family and sadness. This was especially so after reading how the daughter of the firefighter wrote him a letter, of how she wanted him to come home. I also believe that we have gained a lot from the cultural phenomenon and the historical happenings of America, as seen in the pictures. We have gained a more togetherness and feeling of kindness towards each other, as well as a strength and courage towards those who may hurt us. However, these phenomena can also affect us as a country in a bad way, as of generating distrust between people and lessening our pride of our country, as seen by a picture of protestors being sprayed with a fire hose.
Something I observed from these pictures were all based on America. I saw soldiers coming back from war walking with their families and friends smiling, then I also got to see the faces of immigrants waiting to see if they can even get into America. the feelings I got from these pictures varied very much. when I saw the soldiers coming back home I was glad to see that this was captured and people were able to be reconnected. however when I saw that immigrants were waiting to get into America, my mood changed because I thought about how those people might really feel, they are just trying to find a safe home and they are waiting to see if they can enter and stop stressing about their unstable or not apparent home. the last thing I got to thinking about was, what is everyone's ideal America? we all have different perspectives of what America is for us, whether its a safe home, or freedom, or just a place to crash.
As I analyzed the class image gallery I noticed that many of the images shared the common ideas of people struggling, feminism, and the importance of families. Many images showed people struggling for food, water, or shelter due to economic downfall. This resonates today because we take our economy very seriously and citizens feel it is necessary to know how the government is spending money so we do not repeat the mistakes that led to this downfall. The images that portrayed struggles made me feel disheartened and inspired because I was disheartened that our world was ever that bad, but I was inspired because America has greatly improved. Many images also illustrated feminism. Women fought for their rights because they wanted equality. In present times women are given the same rights as men. This makes me feel grateful because I have more rights than many women before me had. Although in modern day women are given the same rights as men, they are still not treated equal, so women continue to fight for equality. Additionally, multiple images depicted the importance of family. It was the American ideal to support a family and for a man to marry a women. This makes me think about how many rights America has gained. Now people are allowed to marry whoever they want and all genders and sexualities are becoming more represented. Similarly to previous times, Americans today still value the importance of family, but people are just more open minded.

As I looked at the images put out in our classroom, I noticed a couple common theme among each of them. All of the images showed themes of hope, equality, and struggle. We have gained solutions and a chance to learn from our past mistakes. The images make me feel as though America has endured many hardships but ultimately we end up overcoming these struggles and from it come a multitude of good things. They shape America because a lot of our culture is based off of learning from past mistakes. For example, women used to have to fight for their rights and equality, of course that is still relevant, but it has improved greatly as we are learning from our past mistakes. I do feel that these images embody the American spirit. They show hope and they show reinvention and that is what America is all about to me. They also show freedom because these people are able to protest and petition without consequences most of the time. These images show the past of America and what hardships, struggles, and good memories that has shaped us and what we are today.

When I walked around the class image gallery I noticed that many of the images had the same ideas of people struggling, and the importance of working together as a family to survive. Many images showed people struggling to find food and water. This connects with today because we take our economy very seriously and citizens feel it is necessary to know how the government is spending money so we do not repeat the mistakes we have already made. Also other pictures showed some police officers and it looked like they don't really care what's happening around them. which can lead to chaos.
While looking at the gallery, I observed some recurring themes. Each picture showed hope, struggle, and equality, or something to those extents. These pictures made me feel sympathy for those in this world that are struggling with their race, sexuality, money issues, etc. Every day, we deal with a huge issue whether it be racism, homelessness, or something equal to that. These photos show what shapes America today and it makes me feel inspired because people struggle every day and fight for what they believe it, and I feel as if I should start fighting for what I believe in. Equality for all is very important (equality for women, black people, homosexuals, etc.) so maybe I should fight for them like others do every day. I want America to be a better place and by fighting for what I believe in may help make a change. These images show what has shaped America and I believe that that is very important.
The images viewed today are the passed down information from generation to generation of American Patriotism. These images showed the highs as well as the lows of the American timeline. However, they all had significance in the sense that they all showed our fundamental pride to be an American. As well as the events that we aren’t proud to call American values. The events displayed showed a variety of outcomes. From the top of the mountain top with triumph, to the lowest of lows with our racist past. All of the events shown are the things that shaped the country, for bad and for good.
These images come to embody the American spirit because it shows the triumph over evil and many others faces of adversity. Without the bad, there can be no good. Bad things may have emerged, but it was always the strong side of America that has prospered. We have and will always overcome tasks such as 9/11 and WWII.
These help us understand what it means to be American because it shows the landmarks we have passed and how things will keep getting better because of these events. The bad can’t always win, and thats because the heart and soul of American values can’t be trampled.
While looking at the gallery, I observed a recurring theme of hope yet struggle within all the images. This gave me simple sympathy and gratitude for what I have and what other don't have. The images show the shape of America and how we have improved and how things are still yet the same. I think we have grown economically well, but somethings are still the same like equality and to some extent racism. As a solution I think we should make a change and get off our phones and realize what is even going on and generally just look around see how much we have come and what we can do better.

These images show moments in the midst of famous American booms and American busts. I think they embody the American spirit because they are very truthful. I think in times of crisis and prosperity are when people rise up to be their best and show their American Spirit, and that is definitely what these pictures show. I think these pictures accurately show what it is to be an American for two main reasons. First, being American is different for everyone and every single person has a different role to play no matter who they are. And second, being American is a team sport; no body can sit out the hardships that we endure together.
While walking around the class looking at the pictures I saw many different pictures of the same background. A lot of the pictures featured a lot of racism towards African Americans. Looking at these pictures it makes me realize how far America has come since the time that those pictures represent, but also that we still have a long way to go. Though racism has gone down drastically since the time in the photos, there is still so much racism still in America today. These pictures show a lot of what can improve in America and that is the most important thing to realize that we aren't perfect and can always improve to be the best we can be to each other everyday.
These images show many different thoughts. Many of the images attached included the same background. Some people are 'patriotic' and some aren't. I think that racism isn't as big of a topic as it was back in the day, but there are areas to improve on.
Multiple images were sad some were great! These images are good feedback as to what we can ALL improve on, and do better overall.
While looking at these images, a lot of sadness came to me. I looked at these photos and saw the pain and struggle that people had gone through. I saw that there was a lot of desperation in these photos. I think that these photos perfectly emulate American life. I think that this is the reality for most people and they have to live in horrible living conditions. And although some of these photos showed the beauty and ideal America that we all look for, it mostly shows the pain and the struggle that so many Americans deal with every day. I think that this shows that although we have come so far, we still have so far to go to give hard-working people the life that they deserve. I think that if someone from another country looked at these photos, they would make the implication that America is sadness and poverty-stricken. They would see the pain and hardships that some many people have had to deal with. I think that this, unfortunately, shows the broken side of America that most people choose to ignore.
After a semester in this class and further understanding of the social climate in past times in America I felt I was more capable to understand these photos. While a lot expressed great hardships I was able to see the hope in many of them. I think this new mindset rooted from being able to look at different sides of the same situation that I learned through reading The Crucible. Now through the pain I see community and hope.
While looking at the pictures I saw that a lot of them were pictures of a disaster or war. These images made me feel appreciative and thankful, because these people were risking their life or lost their life for everyone elses safety. Other images like certain groups of people obtaining rights or the images I talked about show how these events shaped America.
