His indecisiveness do make me snatch my head for a bit. Theres nothing biblical about asking a lady out for lunch. He just have to walk up to her and say it in someway, he could be like James Bond or like a pre-teen asking his first date out. Just get it out... Now excuse me while I go watch The 40 Year Old Virgin.
I agree with you Vincent, he would have to just aks her out, but I think later in the poem on lines 75-98 its talking about something more serious, such as that he already has a date and he has dated this girl for awhile... he is contemplating on asking her to marry him, but is worried about the in-laws preferably the mother. I agree that he should just ask her out but then later if he is so unsure about asking her a big question without a fight or something he shouldn't ask untill he is ready.then from that I think the big question is how would he know hes ready to ask someone on marriage if hes so shy to even ask for a date? or is it a comparison? Thats my oppinion anywase.
I agree with vincent, Katy, and Alison, I do not understand why it is so hard for Prufrock to just ask the girl out. But I also can understand why he is confused about it. I mean we all at sometime or another get caught up in the moment and we tend to not think straight. Also emotions sometimes can also get in the way and can cause us to not really think staight. But in the end if I were Prufrock I would not be as indecisive but I might still be a little confused.
Prufrock's indecisiveness makes me think a little. I agree with everyone else when they say that they just dont know why he doesnt askher out. Ya and it is pretty weird that he is thinking about marriage before he even goes out on a date with her. He kinda seems a little obcessed.
Prufrock seems like a very depressed or confused man. I don't think he really know what he wants?! I agree especially with Katy that he is contemplating something very big. What he is contemplating I am not so sure. The love song of J. Alfred Prufrock is not what I was expecting from a piece of that title. This almost brings me back the the themes of gothisism the supernatural (love) acting upon what is in reality (his isolation). Very intersting love song. Maybe he has been hurt by love?
It seems like Prufrock is trying to rush into things. He wants to be in a relationship but he wants to take a shortcut. He is just going to walk up to someone and expect them to be his wife. Life doesn't work that way. I agree with Jaclyn that it is weird he thinks about marriage before the first date. If I were Prufrock I would stop to get my life on track before I start dating someone. Prufrock thinks he has no time to waste waiting for the right time, but in reality he has as much time as he needs.
Prufrock's indecisiveness speaks to me in the sense that I am the same way when it comes to approaching the opposite sex. I can relate to him being unsure and self-conscious when he is intimidated. The way he belittles himself in his mind is typical of a teenager perhaps, but should not be a trait of an adult. Adults should be self assured and un interested in others opinions on them; because they should have learned through their life that being insecure is only a hindrance and is truly unnecessary. This trait of insecurity that Prufrock demonstrates makes me think that like Katy said he is simply not emotionally "ready" to be asking any girl out.
I am going to have to agree with Eddie that the title is very deceiving. I also believe that he does not know what he wants. He talks about marriage but does not have the courage to ask her out on a date. Also he talks about terrible restaurants and run down hotels that he would want to visit. I don't think that a women would appreciate that. He needs to decide what he really wants to do in life.
I think that everyone is indecisive about the opposite sex. Prufrock is just a lacking self confedience which makes him even more afraid to ask girls out, i think that everyone has self doubt but those whoa are able to push themselved into doing something they do not want to do are strong. I think that there are more people like Prufrock then we think. People like him should just act like they have confedence and fool everyone else about how they carry themselves.
I believe that his indecisiveness is a symbol an/ or illustration of fear, isolation, and doubt. In the poem it seems that for the entire duration, the author is unsatisfied with the way he is living. This can be seen at one point in the poem where he compares his way of living to measures of coffee spoons. All in all, the indecisiveness of th author proves that he is constantly doubtful and lonely.
Prufrock's indecisiveness bothers me because life is honestly too short to be analyzing such things as going up too the opposite sex and starting a conversation with them. I feel sorry for Prufrock that he lacks social skills and that he will never have a chance for love simply because he is afraid of what others will think. It is important to be aware of what others think of you but to the extent where you crawl up and hide in a shell like a hermit crab just so others will not judge you is taking it to far. Every human being holds the fear of what others will think of us, for some of us it is easy to overcome this fear, for others like Prufrock it is nearly impossible.
I'm going to agree with Brett P. Prufrock thinks that he can rush into a relationship with little time for anything else. In reality there are few times you can just jump into a meaningful relationship with someone you have just only met.
I think that like everyone else has said that Prufrock is rushing into the relationship. He may be feeling a false sense of love and believes that he must keep following where ever the love takes him. This may be why he is so indecisive in what he does. I know that life throws things at you fast but that doesn't mean that you have to move into them as fast as they come to you.f
I think that Prufrock's indecisiveness speaks to me because it makes me ask why is Prufrock so shy to talk about himself. This makes me wonder what he has gone through during his life to make him like this. I agree with what Vincent and Alli B said that why doesn't Prufrock just ask out the girl. He has nothing to lose!
