Frederick Douglass, A TED Talk, And Perception?
How does the TED Talk video by Lisa Kristine relate to Frederick
Douglass and the message of his narrative that we are reading? How does
this make you reconsider how you think about a certain person or
group? Through this reading and viewing experience, have you started to
perceive or feel differently? This blog response is due by Monday, March 4th at 3:40p.m.

Both, the book that we are reading, and the Ted talk we watched, give off the same message. They show how bad slavery is, and the realness of it all. The theme with the book and show, are to make you aware of these situations, so if you want to help, you can. They give real life examples of the situations these slaves have to go through, the pain they feel, and the condition they live in. It is not safe for them, and they are treated like objects that are thrown away when they are done being used. Both the book and video have been making me feel sad, as I could never imagine how bad the conditions of these slaves lives might be. I can not help either, it is almost like they are stuck there. We, as citizens, almost have to watch these people be abused, hurt, and treated wrong. It is a very sad but true situation that still goes on today. You can try to help, by donating to companies, but this problem that has been going on for decades, is still a major issue. We have to hope that these people are able to make it out, because this life they are living, is not fair in any way, and needs to change.
Her TED Talk relates to Fredrick Douglas' journey because she talks about how she saw people who were basically slaves that live in today's society. These people work 17+ hours a day with no pay, yet they don't know any better. This was the same for Douglas. He spent his whole life as a slave, but because he was born into it, he didn't know any better. This makes me reconsider a lot of things because yes, I realized that slavery was a terrible thing but I didn't realize how awful it was until now. I feel more heartbreak for those that have had to endure this lifestyle than I used to because I can now see exactly what they're going through.
After watching the TED-Talk I was shocked by by his many people re enslaved today, and how cheap it is for people to buy whole families. This shows how people really take a lot for granted. We are all free, and tend to complain about it often. People are going through things I could never imagine going through yet I still find a way to complain about my WIFI not working. I think the main thing I take away from this is how lucky I really am to be in place like where I am.
The Ted talk and in the book both show the tradgedies that slavery has done to people. Hundreds of years ago we had slavery and it's sad and heart breaking to see and know that it still goes on in the world even though it is illegal everywhere around the world some people can't escape this slavery. The saddest part was that some people didn't even know that they were slaves they just believed that's how life was that's what you were born to do for the rest of your life. People are Humans Humans are people, so why are we treating them as if they are slaves and don't have other purposes in the world when there is so much out there. Most of these people will never experience the amazing things that life and the rest of the world has to offer, because they have been born and raised as working slaves, even when illegal.
I think they relate because they both are a wakeup call. With the numbers of 27 million really his home and opens your eyes. It makes you think how great we have it as americans and how truly fortunate we are. This definitely has made me feel different, like I said it makes me feel empathy for those who have to go through this. Also makes me feel bad about myself because I do have it so good. Any person would kill to have what I have and would kill to be safe just like I am today. The ted talk and the book definitely put things into perspective.
This video relates to Frederick Douglass message because they both describe the horrors which comes with slavery. Many people, especially now believe that slavery doesn't exist anymore because it is illegal all around the world. Even though slavery is illegal it still happens everyday, even in America. By reading and watching this video it has made me more conscious of all of the bad things going on in the world. It has made me feel grateful for all of the things I have and that I was lucky enough to be born into a family instead of possibly slavery. I couldn't begin to imagine what people who are enslaved have to go through. It has made me extremely grateful for all of the things I have and previligages I am granted with.
Something that strongly connected between the TED talk and Fredrick Douglass was that both Douglass and the modern day slaves, most of them haven't known anything except slavery. They have struggled to know that they haven't been given things that are considered basic human decency. This makes me think that I need to work harder to help those that can't help themselves because there are people in the world that are being treated like animals and property used only for labor that they didn't agree to which is completely unfair in every way. These people deserve help and they deserve to how horribly they are being treated. This hasn't necessarily changed my perspective, but it shows me just how hard we need to work to help others.
The Ted Talk and the narrative have both helped me realize that the sentence, "it was in the past," is a lie. People are still being sold, people are still being enslaved, people are still risking their lives for nothing. There are people that are being treated as property. We may say that slavery is in the past, but it isn't. Denver is a dangerous place to be because of so much trafficking. People are still going to be sold and will always be in danger.
The way the video showed the economic viewpoint and that the people went through, showed a real side of it happening now. And also showed the past of the Atlantic slave trade. This showed that the lives aren't looked at but simply manufacturing an item. the final product
After watching the video, There are a lot of connections. Both the video and TED talk are seriously dealing with slavery. In the TED talk, it talks a lot about in today's work people are being enslaved even though it's illegal. People in those places have to work 16 to 17 hours a day. With no water, brakes or food. This really makes me think about how lucky we are as americans to be free. I really would like to abolish slavery for good, because no one wants to live a life like this.
I think that the Ted Talk really did connect to Frederick Douglass. In the TED talk, they say that many of them have no idea they are in slavery because that has been his whole life. The TED talk made me second guess my whole life because that is happening in our world today and I had no idea. Slavery is an issue and is never okay for any cause. These people are working for no pay for 16-17 hours a day and still, do not know they are educated. In the book and Ted talk both of them say if they try to rebel they will all just get punished more and so none of them have the courage to stand up for themselves, except a slim few. Another connection to the book is that these people work in the sun barely getting enough food and water to live. They have no choice, but to do what their master says because they would get punished. Both the Ted talk and book related a lot to slavery and changed my whole perspective on life and slavery itself.
Like Lisa Kristine, I was very surprised at the large scale that slavery is still going on. Knowing that very overt and systematic slavery is still going on undetected is shocking to hear. Similar to the last blog prompt, this woman talks a lot about the figures and numbers and how many people are still forced to live in slavery. When put together with Frederick Douglass’s narrative, it is also put into perspective. Even though they are different time periods and different forms of slavery, the type of cruelness that keeps it going is still persisting into today.
The video by Lisa Kristine relates to Frederick Douglass because in both the TED Talk and the narrative, the people are being held against their will and they are having to work for someone else. Slavery has become a pretty big issue all around the world still to this day, but the difference from then and now is that the people do not even know that they are enslaved now, they just think that the way they live their life is the way it’s supposed to be lived. It is devastating that people have to live their life that way. Seeing people live this way, opens up my eyes more and helps me realize how grateful I am for everything I have. Even after reading the narrative of Frederick Douglass, my eyes have been opened. Slavery has become a worldwide issue that needs to be stopped in general.
The TED Talk by Lisa Kristine relates to Frederick Douglass because she talks about her first person experience of witnessing slavery around her similarly to how Frederick Douglass narrates his experience being in slavery and witnessing slavery. This makes me reconsider our world today. I did not realize that there was so much slavery that continued in our world. I assumed slavery was gone for good, but that is not the case. Now being informed about organizations such as Free The Slaves, I am motivated to support these organization and help end slavery. I am heartbroken by the amount of evil that continues in our world; slavery, violence, and inequality.
Lots of the things that Lisa Kristine says relates to the narrative that we are reading from Frederick Douglass. What she is saying about modern-day slavery goes in line with what Frederick Douglass says. This is showing that even though the world has come a long way, there is still a long way to go in order to have a slave-free world. Seeing the expression on the faces of modern slaves makes me think how similar it must have been back when Frederick Douglass was a slave.
The TED talk by Lisa Kristine gives a window into the life of modern day slaves. This TED talk as well as the book by Frederick Douglass show just how brutal life as a slave is today as well as in the past. They both show that while slavery is mostly illegal not much has changed since the time when Douglass was a slave, there are more slaves now who are treated just as terrible as they were in the past. Both of these pieces were made to bring awareness to this terrible treatment and just how hard life a slave whether modern of past is. Both those perspectives have made me feel very bad for these slaves as I cannot imagine having to go through what they are. This has changed my perspective dramatically because I did not realize how prevalent slavery is today, I always thought of it as a problem in the past we overcome but it clearly has not been resolved and must be addressed.
After watching the TED talk, I have come to realize how much people don't know. I had always thought that legitimate slavery was a thing of the past. I knew people in other countries worked in horrible conditions with extremely little pay, but I didn't know the slavery issue was still this bad. After seeing the numbers of slaves in captivity now, it's arguably worse than it was before. With new world ideals, the slaves get overworked to the conditions of new era technology without pay or remote security. A new world solution needs to surface because we can't still have old world problems where this type of behavior is accepted.
Some of the messages from Douglass’ story and Kristine’s presentation perfectly echo each other. Douglass’ insider perspective on the slavery of old, and Kristine’s socioeconomic evaluation of the slavery of today show how greed has, is, and will continue to drive people to do awful things to each other. For only $18 entire families can be doomed to lives of suffering and toil for the sake of an avaricious master’s illegal gains. No part of treating another person as property is right, and the fact that such a thing has been an issue for hundreds of years is nothing short of tragic.
The TED talk correlates directly to the Frederick Douglass narrative. Lisa discusses how modern day slavery still exists and how there are people still experiencing the same pain and suffering of a slave. These both relate to each other in the sense that both are real painful experiences involving the tragic idea of slavery. One statistic that really stood out to me was the fact the over 27 million people are living in modern day slavery. This is an insanely large number and is extremely saddening and terrifying. Real people are suffering and are having their freedoms completely ripped away from. This is a beyond serious issue that needs attention as well as an overall increase in awareness worldwide.
The TED talk and Frederick Douglass's novel correspond directly as they both touch on the subject of slavery. Lisa talks about how we still have slaves and how badly these people are treated. She talks about that most of these people have no idea that they are enslaved. She acknowledges that knowledge is power in this type of situation. She talks about how we need to bring more awareness to this situation. Frederick Douglass talks about some of the same things. He talks about how some people on the plant, mainly little kids no not know that they are even enslaved. He talks about how when they finally realise that they are enslaved, they will want more out of life and they will work towards that goal. I always knew that slavery was something bad but I didn't realise how much of a problem it is still today.
The TED talk and Douglass both show aware of modern slavery. Both aware the painful experiences that slaves have to go through every day. Think about it, The amount of work they have to do everyday and they barley get pay and hardly fed is sad. The numbers are going up and its scary. This is how society is. People are suffering each day and needs to be addressed worldwide.
After watching the TED Talk about modern slavery, it reminded me of how Frederick Douglass states that a slave has to have the mindset of being free before freedom could become a reality. I thought of this after Lisa Kristine, the host of the TED Talk explained how some of the slaves she encountered weren’t aware that they were slaves because slavery was all they knew of. It is evident that, if Kristine and the Free The Slaves foundation wanted to free these people, they would first have to inform the slaves of their condition, and the slaves would have to have the mindset and idea and hope of being free.
After watching the ted talk and reading our book in class, my biggest reaction to this is how other people react because of how much they think they know and end up not knowing anything. People need to realize that slavery was not just an era of past times. This is something happening now as well. as shocking as it may be, slavery can start with the one question of "do you want a job?" slavery can be blatant and not apparent in our every day life but it is there and something needing to be changed.
After watching this ted talk, they really cut in depth with slavery, showing how it still is a thing, and how it was back then Both the video and TED talk are seriously dealing with slavery. In TED talk, it talks a lot about in today's work people are being enslaved even though it's illegal. People in those places have to work all day. With no water, brakes or food. but they do it to supply for there family.
Slavery was really dissected well in this TED talk, the common american may have a decent idea of the effects of slavery, but when you look a little bit deeper into all of its quite astonishing how we have treated each other throughout our time on this planet. People like Frederick Douglass do not come very often, and for one man to have such a huge impact on this big of an issue is amazing. Douglass had a mindset of constant positivity and continued to preach it for the rest of his life, even after he himself became a free man.
This TED talk and the pictures that I saw humbled me. When looking at these photos I took a step backed and recognized the times in my life in which I have been given so man incredible opportunities that I have been given. I was able to notice where in my life I must check myself. Americans often forget what is happening around them if it isn't in their day to day lifestyle. People brush past the idea of slavery and there has been a complete increase of slavery since the slave trade which makes me sad. I want to help but I truly dont know how.
The ted talk went into deep detail of slavery, and what the differences of it are from back then to now. It is now illegal but happens everywhere across the nation.Douglass made a huge impact on this subject and it changed not only his but many others lives. Many families have suffered and are suffering from slavery and this should be addressed across the nation.
The Ted Talk goes into detail of the past history of slavery and shows how even though it doesn't exist in the same essence, and may not be prevalent to where we live geographically, but is more prevolent in numbers compared to the 1800's. It exists underground and is not discussed publically so it goes unseen, and nothing is done about it.
This Ted Talk really went into detail with slavery. It spoke of how it looked back then and how it looks now. I think that This relates to Frederick Douglass because he was a slave. He experienced this painful life that people now still go through but back then it was legal. Which is almost scary. But now there is human trafficking which is just as scary because it still goes un noticed and they combat it by putting notes on bathroom stalls saying to call this number if your a human that is being trafficked. We truly don't have a solution to this and its hard to combat when its underground.
The TED Talk went into a lot of detail with slavery. It talked about what the slaves had to go through and how it has changed throughout time. While slavery isn't nearly as big of an issue today as it used to be, the TED Talk really showed just how prominent it still is in our society. People will do almost anything to help their families and to have food on the table and sometimes, the only way for them is to become a slave to someone else. And that's horrible.
