I think that the artist is showing a slaves life in a day. The pictures show the unfair lives that the slaves had compared to the white people. It shows the hardship of the slave's life. One of the photos shows a black man getting beat up by white men. This shows us how their lives were. Even if that man did nothing wrong he still gets punished. The punishment he is getting is so cruel and in the photo, it shows him getting wiped. The Slaves look exhausted and out of breath, but it doesn't matter because they have to keep working no matter what. These photos illustrate what Frederick Douglass's life looked like, but it doesn't show how hard and tiring each job was. They try to give a visual of what he looked like. There is no sympathy for any of these people in American. All of them were pushed to the limits. I think this depicts Frederick Douglass's message by showing us how hard it was for him and so many others. It shows how unequal America was and how it grew from that.
I think the artist is depicting everything that a slave must go through. Each piece of artwork shows parts of a slaves day. One of the pictures shows a black man working with a saw, there is blood around the piece of wood. It is apparent that this man cut himself with the saw, but he continues to work because he knows if he doesn't he will get punished. Looking through the pictures you can tell all of slaves are tired and need a break, yet they as well fight through the exhaustion in fear of getting punished if they stop. These pictures depict Frederick Douglass' message because they show the hardship and pain that each and every slave must go through just to survive. It shows how none of the white people cared what they did to the slaves because they had a different color of skin.
I believe the art represents, the people and how they lived and how slavery impacted them but how they lived as people and how they worked and loved. There are subtle pieces on each of the art pieces that represent slavery in subtle yet impactful ways. These pictures help represent Frederick Douglass story and the impact that it made on his life. Both also illustrate how not only were they slaves and were suffering during this time but this is how they lived and loved one another.
After hearing Frederick Douglass's perspective, it relates to these pictures in many ways. All through Frederick's stories, we see how horrific it is living as a slave during this time period. Not only were they treated unfair, they were abused, and put through the worst conditions. There life was almost unlivable. In the pictures, we get a visual of the ways they were treated. You see how dominant the white people were compared to the slaves. They treated the slaves like they were dirt, or just property they owned. The pictures showed the blood lost, how badly they were treated, and what they had to go through on an everyday bases. Both, the stories and pictures, paint a picture in our head of how the life was back then, and how it was unfair and how insane it was.
The pictures/arts represent slavery. It shows how slaves lived and how slavery impacted each slave. Some pictures show the slaves doing work like in the picture where they are sawing. They appear to be tired but they have to keep working regardless. The picture where a black man is sitting in a chair and white men were surrounding him. This shows how white men treated people that don't have the same color of skin as them. The art gives us a visual on what Fredrick Douglass life was like and how hard the jobs were for the slaves and himself. This depicts his message showing how hard society was in America and how hard it was for him personally.
The artwork appears to depict the daily struggles of slaves back in Douglass’ time, showing them held at swordpoint or toiling away on one of many arduous tasks. These images suggest some of the same ideas Douglass brings up in his book. In particular, the painting Deception brings Douglass’ description of treacherous slave owners to mind; in which they would stoop as low as taring fences and inspiring false hopes solely to inflict further suffering upon their slaves. With the other paintings depicting similarly powerful scenes, together they display the same message, “to be a slave is to suffer immensely.”
The art is very powerful in the way it depicts his life. The beautiful ways it shows him going through his struggles. The painting Revolt on the Amistad is extremely powerful in how it shows slaves being harmed and pulled back down. As if they were never able to escape. Which for many was true. They weren't allowed to be treated like people because of someone buying them. The painting Strategy, there appears to be fire or something around them, which to me means that they had a limited time before they were in serious danger and escape would have been like escaping a fire.
After looking at Jacob Lawrence's artwork about slavery, I overall was just amazed to see what kind of emotion he could get out of one painting alone. His artwork is very abstract in a way. This meaning that its not the full picture, but you can still tell what is going on. What I find very interesting is that your imagination can run free because these paintings have "open" minds making you think about deeper about what might have really happened.
After viewing Jacob Lawrence's art, I think the artist's message is to show African-American culture/history and also illustrate a slave's everyday life. The art portrays how slaves were mistreated. In every art piece, there is the commonality of struggle or violence. Lawrence's art style is more modern and does not show a lot of detail, it is focused on the bigger picture and telling a story. The art depicts Frederick Douglass and his story as a challenge by showing slave labor and slaves journey to freedom. Frederick Douglass also is shown as a hopeful figure by illustrating his promise of a better life even in the hardest circumstances.
After viewing Jacob Lawrence’s gallery about Frederick Douglass, I think it makes Douglass’s story more accessible to the reader. The fact that we wrote his memoir years after his long journey, he looks back at it with more experience when writing it. I think looking at some of these illustrations of Douglass’s earlier days helps us really see his younger days through his younger eyes. I think it helps us understand his story better because it illustrates more the hardship and pain that he went through that might feel rushed in the story, even though a big period in his life was going through that. I think it helps me piece together some of the periods in Frederick Douglass’s life through illustration.
After viewing Jacob Lawrence's artwork a message of slavery and the slave's everyday life is revealed. Each photo shows how cruel slavery was; through the work they did and the punishments they suffered. The way the paintings were done shows how a slaves brain may have been working; confused, delirious, emotional, and many more emotions. The paintings relate to Frederick Douglass because Douglass had endured many of the same things as the slaves in the paintings. Frederick Douglass also relates to the paintings because he had struggles similar to the other people in the paintings.
After viewing the artwork of Jacob Lawrence, it shows a message of slavery and the lives of these slaves. It shows the culture and history of African Americans. The artwork relates to Frederick Douglass's because Douglass went through slavery for most of his life and I because of these paintings, I am now better able to understand what Douglass went through.

after seeing thus artwork and thinking about it, it shows the history and some throwback meaning of African culture, it all connects to Frederick Douglas. Douglass went threw slavery his nearly his whole life, sadly this all relates.
After viewing Jacob Lawrence's art, the message depicts that slavery is confusing and has a lot of different angles and sides to a million stories. The are shows the stories of slaves and the culture it created. It shows a culture of a people that felt that they were treated as a different species. It is sad. A lot of the art seems to depict these people when they finally have knowledge how they are no longer enslaved and that very much relates to Frederick Douglass's message.
After observing this artwork I can see slavery being portrayed in a cruel yet unique way. The colors of the image really add to the images and what there meaning is. Overall I feel like these images show the harsh life of slaves and what there lives were really like. Jacob Lawrence incorporates the slaves daily tasks through abstract artwork with very vibrant colors. His painting style allows for interpretation which is extremely impressive and overall very eye opening. This aspect connects to Fredrick Douglass and his message of how there was no sympathy for slaves and how they were truly treated so poorly. The way that Lawrence expresses this awful time period is really interesting and creative.
The artwork shows the different struggles and perspectives of slavery, the moods of the different images can easily be justified by the simple yet meaningful color schemes. Some may think of slavery as a very simple problem, but this artwork touches on the present complexity of the matter. The lack of care and value for human life is a factor that drove Frederick Douglass to take action, these images connect to him in that way, as the disrespect is clearly shown.

The artwork that I see shows the different, gruesome, and abstract look at slavery. When looking at these pictures, my heart hurts knowing that people had to deal with the atrocities shown in these drawings. These pictures represent every part that gets glossed over. Looking at this puts my life into perspective knowing that I live an easy and incredible life. I continue to look at these and pray for the people that they are in a better place. These pictures illustrate slavery in a way that I have never seen before. It truly puts the pain and torment that slaves went through into perspective.
The art represent slavery and how they live. They are constantly working and always tired but don't have any other option. They had rough lives, this connects to Fredrick Douglas stating slaves were treated poorly. This was shown very creatively by the artist in the art work.
The artwork is a form of realism art during the industrial revolution. This art shows the harsh reality of life. It shows how slaves lived during the gruesome period. It shows just how brutal man can really be to each other. It is reminescent of the Roman times, and how brutish we are. It honestly shows how man will always be violent and brutish, especially because of how recent slavery was.
The artwork created helped visualize Fredericks life. The pictures almost made Frederick seem small and worthless to the painting, but then you can see him standing over all the other slaves, as almost a leader. Then as the pictures progress with time, you can see the pictures almost symbolically give Frederick power, by putting him in a higher place than others. To show that he was in fact respected later, he stood just as tall, if not taller than the white people and you could see their focus was on him. Dressed well and organized. It is clear they predict him as more than a slave.
After viewing this artwork I feel I have gained a better understanding of Fredrick Douglas's incredibly harsh lifestyle. It showed the way of life for those who lived in slavery. While it is still unimaginable what these people had to suffer through I feel as though it has improved my knowledge of what has happened.
