Frederick Douglass, A TED Talk, And Perception?

How does the TED Talk video by Lisa Kristine relate to Frederick Douglass and the message of his narrative that we are reading?  How does this make you reconsider how you think about a certain person or group?  Through this reading and viewing experience, have you started to perceive or feel differently?

Both the text and the video conveys the message that people should not be treated under that conditions that they are when enslaved. Terrible and violent actions are taken to keep people in place and just being enslaved is wrong in itself. This makes me feel so bad for these enslaved and I can't even imagine how people can care so little about the lives of others. This reading hasn't change my view on slavery, I have always believed slavery is a terrible thing, but has opened my eyes and given me awareness what is actually happening today and what used to happen.

This relates hugely to Fredrick Douglas's story because of how despite time passing the same problems are continuing to occur. In the TED talk we were shown people having to work under very harsh conditions under the threat of violence for no compensation. People work for 16-17 hours a day with no food or water breaks. This is incredibly inhumane and is something that shouldn't be happening due to how illegal it is. These conditions are similar to Fredrick Douglas's. He had a similar experience to what these people are going through the only major difference is he also was part of the "free the slaves" group. He secured his own freedom and helped abolish slavery. Watching this TED talk I found it surprising how many people are still enslaved and not only that but how cheap their lives are. This video is quite saddening but also a good thing to view as it helps spread awareness which is a huge part of ending something that is inhumane.

This video relates directly to Fredrick Douglass, and the similar problems that he faced. It pains me to see this still happening in today's world. I think about all the hardships and pains that I have endured or haven't, and it is far better than what these people do everyday. I can't imagine a 7 year old boy having to go through his day without breaks carrying more than his body weight over and over for 16 hours.

The ted talk and Douglas have a lot in common. The Ted Talk explained how all around the world slavery is in action. The way they are violently threatened to work for no money and risk their lives to try to do what they are told too. The way Fredrick Douglas talks is just about the same. The way him and the people he knew around him were treated and enslaved breaks your heart. Through the reading and viewing experience, I have started to perceive and feel differently. It used to be a topic that was shoved in the back of my head because it doesn’t happen in front of you like it did in the old days. But even though it isn’t happening in front of me it is still happening throughout the world, and it is dramatically devastating. It makes you feel a whole new type of hurt for the world. It makes me think of how disgusting and brutal this world really is.

The video and the book regarding Frederick Douglass talk about how people shouldn't be treated miserable like if they were slaves. We talk about having equality and how liberty is very important but we don't realize that other people are struggling with maintain this as a divine right. In the Ted Talk, we saw a more intern version of what it is like to be enslaved, just like Frederick Douglass described. He gave us the truth without any sugar coaching in it. Slavery is full of inhuman behavior. This didn't change my perspective because I already know how bad slavery can get. Overall, it made me imagine how these people might be feeling and I guess I'm not even close to their feelings. It's so terribly unbelievable how some people care so little of how big this issue is. This video also gave me an awareness that it is happening nowadays and it's a tremendous issue.

After reading chapters from Fredrick Douglass, and watching the TED talk about modern day slavery, there are some similarities between the two. First white I noticed is that there was always at least one person realizing what is going on is wrong. In Fredrick Douglass, its himself that realizes slavery is wrong, and in the TED talk, it is the person talking that realizes that slavery is wrong. In both cases, everyone involved doesn't have enough power to change slavery, to be right, which is sad but true. I also noticed that in the slave's point of view, they were always working hard brutal hours, with no food, water, or rest. These strict rules were common between the two texts.

Both the video and the text conveys the message that the people who were enslaved should not have been treated under the conditions that they were. The way they were treated was unspeakable. The things that happened to them are things no human nor living thing should have to endure. This makes me look at how bad the enslaved peoples lives really were. This made me see that even today how it still goes on and how these things are still around. It really opened my eyes to see how lucky I really am and that people in the world have it much worse then any of us really know.

The TED talk relates to Frederick Douglas because slavery has always been a part of society. In my opinion, his narrative comes from his experience of being someone who was enslaved. The emotion that I felt reading about Frederick Douglas’ experience was sadness. I’ve read a lot in history classes about the cruelties of past slavery; but the thought that it still exists today, and that men, women, and children are still abused and treated so inhumanely is sickening. When I began I honestly felt like this kind of thing happening was a thing of the past, but then I saw the pictures of modern day people it was just such a sad and horrible realization.

The Ted talk video and Fredrick Douglas's narrative both showed the sufferings and hardships people faced going through slavery and how no one was able to help them because for some people it was the usual way of life. They both opened up to their experience and made the public become more aware on how incredibly inhumane slavery is. This made me feel grateful for the life I have now and to think that to this day slavery still exists.

Both the message in the Ted talk and the book both describe horrible conditions that people have to deal with in slavery. The book describes in grave detail how the overseers punish and control people while the Ted talk showed us how in modern day slavery its the same thing. People in the book are enslaved by their race and in the Ted talk they are enslaved by as little as a $18 debt. To be forced into such conditions by such a small amount of money is crazy to me. This makes me feel a lot worse because I would've thought that a lot of slavery was gone or that it was at least in better condition that it is in. It makes me feel grateful for my life and that I am not in that position, but sad and wanting to help those who are in that position.

Both of these media sources show slavery and how it works in different places across the globe and in different time periods. In Fredrick Douglass' narrative, it shows the roots of slavery in America and both outlines how it works and the effects it has on the people involved. Similarly, the TED talk describes modern day slavery in parts of the world like Africa and Asia. It also shows the effects it has on the people involved and how it works.

I think the relation also shows how far we have come in human rights since the early days of the North American slave trade. Slave trade is now not an acceptable practice in all modern nations, and has been limited to nations that face other fundamental problems with their government.

At the same time this also avoids describing certain types of slavery that have become more prominent in today's culture than they were during the American slave trade. In all it does it's job of describing the differences between today's labor enslavement and labor enslavement 500 years ago.

The message of the TED Talk and the book are very strong. They make the viewer or reader feel a lot of emotions all at once. These two pieces make me think about how slavery is going on all over the world. It is going on today, even when we do not realize it. This experience has made me feel differently towards slaves and people who are trapped in the system. I want to free them and make them not have to live that lifestyle, but I know it will take a lot more than one person. These two things make me take a step back and realize what is happening in our world.

The Ted talk and the book are both very similar and applicable to todays world. The Ted talk makes me feel bad that I complain about my problems, when kids younger than me are experiencing worse. And the book makes me feel bad about what our country used to be like. But what I take from this is that we as Americans need to stop ignoring the bigger problems into days world. Also I feel that we can make a big difference and rise above our problems to help someone in greater need.

Watching this Ted talk made me realize that there is slavery everywhere and not just in one certain place. The way that the video applied to Fredrick Douglass is how in his book he talks about how they got no breaks they worked all day long and if he did something to make their master upset they would get in trouble just like in the video if they gave them food or talked to them or filmed them sometimes they could get in trouble. This Ted talk also made me realize what horrible living conditions these people are in and how bad they are actually treated it makes me feel like I should do something about and that we all should help them get out of their situation .I see how people stereotype that slaves are just in Africa because that really all we were taught about and this video makes me see the bigger picture of slaves.

This ted talk has made me start thinking about the many things that I am lucky to have in my home. I should be grateful for the things that I have, and I should complain because there are many people out there in the world that are going to much worse things that I am. The speaker for this ted talk had an amazing message to send to the young generation. Everything thing she says about slavery is so incredible. She has lived the life that she speaks up about, and I think that is amazing. Having someone like her spread awareness is amazing. Overall, this video has brought back why I was so different when I was younger, and this video has shown me things that I have believed that was "eliminated" or reduce, but I was wrong. Slavery is still growing at a large rate, and we need to stop it.
