Old And New Worldview?

Do you see evidence of the worldviews of the Puritans and rationalists around you today?

One piece of evidence of the worldviews of the Puritans around us today is, on a more global scale, the conflict right now between the Sunni’s and the Shiites in the Middle East, both being so extreme and radical in their religion to the point of being willing to kill for it. Evidence of the worldviews of the rationalists around us today is the calmer, more moderate religious Americans that go to church every week, but don’t base their entire existence on God. It is interesting to see how the evanescent Puritans views here in America have moved over to the East, and how the rationalist views have grown exponentially.

A piece of evidence that stands out to me is the debate about stem cell research. People that have demonstrated puritan ways believe that it is bad for us to mess with the natural growth of humans. They feel that it is wrong to manipulate with god's creations in that way. The rationalists people believe that stem cell research is good for the future human race and will allow us to develop cures for diseases that have so far eluded us.

I think a piece of evidence that sticks out is abortion. To some people it is right for several reasons (rape victim, teen pregnancy etc.), to others it's wrong to kill what god has created, which i believe shows a puritan beliefe or ideal in a way.

A place that stands out to me is also abortion. Abortion is one of the most contoversial topics looming around in America today. From a puritanic view abortion is something that is morally wrong. Other people feel that depending on the situation it is ok to have an abortion. Either way this moral conflict can definatly be realated to puritans beliefs.

I think you can still see Puritan and rationalist views around us today. I think that looking back at past generations, like our grandparents, you can see how much different they are. They are more conservative than today's generation. They lived in a time that was more like how the Puritan's were, where people had faith and lived their lives for God. Today we have poeple challenging that all the time. People today are more rationalist than Puritan. They want reasons for things. But you can still see both, in big issues. Like for example the Pledge of Allegiance. There are people who want to take the part about God out, and others that want it to stay. But i think both are still in our everyday lives.

I think to me abortion stands out the most just because it is a topic that is brought up around the world. I believe the Puritans have not faded away into the mists of past history and these people are still with us. The Puritans didn't really agree with abortion and some still don't today. I feel as if abortion were to be used in a necessary situation like Molly had mentioned rape, it would be all right. I think whoever is caught up with deciding if they want an abortion is up to them.

One peice of evidence is that there are people out there in the world who are willing to do anything that they want, even kill, to prove that their religion is right. Then there are the people who go to church because they had to when they were a kid and its something that tey cant stop doing, but see the need of having thei lives based on that religon. People who are doing anything to prove that their religion and god are right are praying to their god everyday at least twice a day. while most americans ony pray to god when thay did something wrong.

One obvious issue that important to the Puritans was abortion. Now the Puritans did not believe in the use of abortion. However, unlike the Puritans, in todays society it has become to be looked upon as "Well, theres always abortion..." I feel that, like what Cayli said, it is unfair for rape victims to have to raise a baby they are not ready for. However, there are other ways of going about it. If such a horrible thing were to happen, there are "Morning After" pills and other drugs with similar purposes. So I personally do not believe in abortion and I think also that there are others ways to keep from getting pregnant.

i think that one of the largest pieces of evidence in todays times is the influence of religion as in everyday life of people. Even now, people are concerned that if they dont live their lives a certain way, they will be dangling in Gods hand over the pit of hell, we read about last weekend.

I belive anyone can get into a debate about the issue of abortion. So many people have so many different views on when it is okay and when it is not okay. To the Puritans however abortion was wrong no matter what the situation was. I belive the world is becoming more independent and have individual views. Unline the Puritans that simply thought in "Black or White".

I agree with what Courtney said. What stands out the most to me is stem cell research. In the rationalists view stem cells can be used help countless numbers of people by providing organs to those in need without the need for donors. I don't think that in the puritan view this couldn't be considered good. However with the ability to grow organs and tissue, people could potentially control the genes of their offspring or even create whatever being they desired. I think that this point is really what makes the difference in view between the rationalist and puritan views.

To me abortion stands out the most also because it is something that is really debated strongly by both groups and each one has their own reasons why they think they are right. Puritans take the fact that a person is taking away another persons life away but in a way it is their own decision. In my opinion i think that when the person is put in that situation it is very difficult and they sould have some say in what happens but i dont think that they should take the life right away. There are alot of other topics that have very many different opinions to them also.

I think Puritans and rationalists are in world views everyday because you hear about them in the media, I think puritans and rationalists should have boundaries because if its unbalanced it causes chaos and i think people should take both views in moderation, here it should be up to each individuals personal judgment on what to take from each views.

When you look at today's society you see both views. In some cases it might not be as obsessive but both the Puritans and rationalists are still around today. Like most people said already I agree on abortion being a big thing now a days. I think it is up to the person to have one or not. It could not have been by choice to get pregnant and they don't feel that they can care for the baby or give it a good future.

I think that abortion stood out the most to me. the Purtians believe that abortion is wrong. I think that women should not be able to get abortions. There are always people who are willing to take care of a child. It is also her body and she has the final descission.

Borrowing Savannah's idea that the strongest piece of evidence is religion, I think she is completely correct. Religion was one of the first things created in the world. The early B.C. Greeks were examples of how Puritan and Rationalist viewpoints came about. They developed gods and goddesses to help them understand nature and the phenomenons of the world. Religion is what man has held onto and what will stay forever because humans need something to fall back on, to bestow trust in and sadly, to blame for our wrong doings. We can find the viewpoints of Puritan's and Rationalist's in Religion very easily. Puritan views are obvious, through believing that everyting is God's will and Rationalist's try to find a solution or reason that would prove to them that there is or isn't a God. Savannah in my opinion couldn't have been more correct in her thinking that religion was and is the largest piece of evidence of Puritan and Rationalist views.

I think that puritanical and rationslist views have been overly apparent in our government. Their views seem to clash more often than not when it comes to important issues. I would consider the republicans to be the puritans because they are more religous based and allow their religion to guide their decisions. Democrats are what I would consider the realists because their views are more based on what they personally think is the better way and although most will be religous, they don't let that get in the way of their decisions.

Think that the most obvious and contriversial evidence that is around us all the time is abortion. Abortion isnt just some black and white issue that we can just say ya it's ok if you accidently get pregnant, or get one if your pregnant. The puritans have a good and understandable belief, it's just more complicated sometimes.

A piece of evidence that stands out to me would be abortion. If the persons willing to take the chance of getting pregnant then they should be able to take care of the baby. If it is rape then i think it should be the womans decision whether or not they want abortion. Puritans believe that abortion is a wrong thing to do but others belive its ok under certain circumstances. So i belive abortion definetly has some connection with Puritan belief.

Today, I do see a lot of pieces of evidence of the worldviews of the puritans around us today. Examples include abortion, religion, evolution, and same sex marriage (gay rights). Everyone has a different opinion on these current issues, and I think that is how it will always be. We all can't agree on the same thing.

Puritanical society reveals certain similar aspects in our modern day culture in various elements. People enforce their religious beliefs on eachother on a bandwagon basis, meaning that they use a majority to enforce an ideal on a minority and control the thoughts and actions of the few this way. Also, in the perspective of the middle easterners-- the united states could seem as a puritanical society that is enforcing their morals on an external society in Iraq. By imposing our governmental structure and economic means on other nations, the US might appear as puritans to Middle Easterners.

A piece of evidence today is all the fus you will hear about church and school should be seperated. It's all those hippie puritans trying to sneak religion to the students and then everyone all gets upset about it. Yet in the eyes of people who say god is the one and only true ruler, they think it should be in school like back in the day, then there are those other people who say that school and church should not be mixed.

I belive the biggest thing that we see from this today is abortion this is very controversial issue in todays life because on one side there are very concerative people who think that the fetius should still have rights eventhough it is unborn and that abortion mean you are only taking life from this Earth and that is the side the puritans would have sided with and there are the people who belive that it is the mothers choice weather he wants the child or not. This issue is hard to decide because both sides can bring up a very good arguement. Now the purtians from the past would belive that something can only be seen as one way which was bad or good in their case if you where a sinner or not but know a days we dont see it as bliack and whie it is easy to see there is a lot of grey area.

ya because we have to deal with people who dont believe in anything. those people make our world way worse because they dont go along with the flow. rationalists help our world because they dont care what goes on.

I think that puritan beliefs are still amongst us. Their old time veiws and ideas help make up our laws and influence many modern political ideas. There are also the similarities among our culture and thiers their society was majorly influenced by religion and i believe that ours is too, after all the puritains made the US what it is today.
