Are You Motivated?

Based upon your own understanding and any studied background information regarding The Crucible, what motivation exists for some of the characters and the drama's author, Arthur Miller?

The characters in The Crucible find their motivation to accuse certain people because they don't like them. From my last years history class we watched a movie about The Crucible and it was very interesting to see how it is believed that the Witch Hunt started. The movie describes that a slave gave the children a book or told them a tale about witchcraft. From their, the girls read the book and started planning their plot. With the added attention from the judges, leaders and community they continued to act irractically. It so happens that the "sickness" occured and added to the girls plot. They could then not only act as though they had the sickness but could have prove that their suspects were witches. In my opinion they obtained their motivation from the amount of attention given to them and the fact that they didn't like certain people and were able to do something about that.

I think that the motivation for the characters is if something that is not natrual or cant be explained, they can play the blam game. Also I believe that the girls wanted the people they hated to be gone, to just leave, and their idea, just like Justin said, was to get the people they hated to be senticed to withch craft.

I think the main motivation is merely dislike or hate of people. There is no "real" explanation for what is going on so people decide to point the finger of accusation in any direction they feel they can.

The characters in The Crucible find their motivation to accuse certain people because they can't explain the events that occur any other way. If something unnatural occurs they start blaming people for it. I think the girls either wanted attention from the other people in the town or they, as justin stated, wanted to get rid of the people that they didn't like or trust, by accusing them of witch craft.

The motivation in the characters for The Crucible is actually unexplainable. They blame certain people for wrong doings and the fact that the people that were blamed for doing what they did was very heroic. They can't explain the motivation though because they have no real evidence to support that these people weren't acting the way they were to get attention from the towns people, but they have no real evidence that shows that that wasn't the reason either. Like Molly said, the main motivation seems to be dislike or hate for or of people that actually can't be put into one puzzle.

The motivation for some of the characters in The Crucible could include the young girls wanting attention. Once they have their attention, they want to keep it coming, so they continue to act oddly and persecute others so that everyone will continue to listen to them. Also, the author may have wanted to point out the absurdity of McCarthy’s accusations at the time by comparing it to the Salem witch trials, and also to show the world the craziness and lack of evidence for McCarthy’s beliefs.

The reason that Miller wrote the crucible in my opinion is to compare two situations in which people were wrongfully blaming others for something that cannot be explained. One being the red scare in the 1950's and the other being the Salem witch trials. As for the motivation of the characters I am in agreement with saraz and what she says about the girls. Even though they knew it was affecting other people they kept doing it because they liked the attention.

I feel the characters motivation from The Crucible can not really be defined. I think the girls were mentally ill and for their reasoning they blamed innocent people who they disliked. To read and learn about how these peolpe tried to convince the town they were innocent was challenging. There was no way to prove that they were innocent because of what the girls had said which was witch craft. I think there was no other explaintion for their illness and it was blamed on a myth.

I think the reason Miller wrote The Crucible was to show how fast fear and hysteria can spread, and how easy it is for people to just follow the pack even when what is being said, or in this case accused, is ridiculous. The girls in The Crucible had the motivation to get attention, and when it was given to them they began to take advantage of that and stir up trouble and drama.

In The Crucible, the girls were experimenting with their identity. By doing this with a group of friends, it motivated them to remain separated from the rest of the citizens. Arthur Miller was showing how mistrust and discrimination can breed hysteria. The girls were forced to go along with Abigail.

I think The Crucible is an example of motivation on how far people will go to get attention. I think the girls didn't really have an explanation on why they were acting that way because it was just unnatural back then and they accused innocent people as the reason why they were acting that way because of witch craft. I think everyone was so superstitious of witch craft back then that if someone comes forward saying people are practicing witch craft with it they would be quick to believe it because its not something people practice everyday.

The motovation for The Crucible's characters is primarily fear. The people of the town fear what is happening to all of its people and do not understand, this is highly beliveable because it is truely in human nature to fear what they do not understand. So people claim the other was a witch this would completely ruin the accused persons life.

I believe one main motivation that was used for the characters was fear; the unexplainable. They were not used to such different actions and thoughts, and so they used violence. People sometimes only find the best way to deal with fear is through violence. "Fear doesnt travel well; just as it can warp judgment, its absence can diminish memory's truth. What terrifies one generation is likely to bring only a puzzled smile to the next...(page 827, Miller)."

one reason that he wrote The Crucible is to show how cruel the witch trials were. people were just in fear of which craf so the began to accuse each other. If you were accused to being a witch you were either hung or confessed to committing a crime agains god. Which was a fate worse than death for the purtains. the book shows how some peolpe made accusations for social gain. there was no proof if you were of were not a witch.

i think that the characters motivation comes from fear. They, like many of us are scared of the unknown. They did not have the medical knowledge to know what was wrong with their friends or family, so they pointed to something that could be accused but not explained. They then attacked their neighbors, selfishly fearing for their own risk of accusation by someone just as scared.

I believe the motivation for the characters is fear. Fear of the unknown, and everyone is trying to balme it on something, someone, or explain it. If they have a reason to blame it on something, the fear becomes less. I think they are doing this to simply be less afraid.

I think that motivation for characters is ignorance. They are not educated in areas of science and medicine therefore they figure that the only answer as to why someone may be sick is withcraft and weird superstitions. The saying goes ignorance is bliss but ignorance is not always bliss for the victims of the witchcraft trials.

I think that the motivation of the characters is hate. The girls wanted to just get rid of their enemies and they did so by saying that these people put a curse on them? If it were this easy to get rid of your enemies today, I think that there would be little people around today because people would just overuse this power of removing your enemy.

Arthur Miller's motivation is that he is comparing the mayhem created by McCarthyism from his time period to the hysteria created by the witch-hunts in Salem. In his comparison he points out how that the search for communist in the US was just as ridiculous as the search for witches, and that the entire turmoil created by the search was all driven by the fear of being named a witch or in Miller's case a communist.
The motivation of the characters in the The Crucible seems to be a game of blaming others before getting blamed. The entire disturbance is driven by the fear of being named a witch, so as a result the characters begin blaming everyone of being a witch in an attempt to prevent themselves from being labeled as a witch.

In my opinion the characters actions from The Crucible aren't really explainable. With the girls having weird hollucinations because of their sickness(some of which were fake) they blamed random inocent people either because they just thought of them randomly or they disliked them. Having to try to explain to the town that you were inocent must have been really hard because you had no proff that you were not a witch and if you admitted to it you would be admitting to worshipping the devil. So it was a very difficult sittuation. As far as the illness that the girls had, there are some sicknesses that have the same simptoms as what they had expierenced but some can not be decribed.

The girls in The Crucible seemed to be wanting attention because of what they did. They kinda of remind me of the story of "The boy who cryed wolf." He would act like he was dangered just to get people to notice him. That seems to be the same thing with the girls trying to get attention, but they put lives at danger and the boy did not. The girls put the blame for their behavior on other people. I feel that the girls did not know the downs to them messing around like they did.

The main reason the characters in the Crucible have motivation is they just want to blame someone for any reason they can find. The world is similar in this way,we blame other countries for our problems and gain solutions by bombing them or taking control of them. The witches were arrested and accused when no one really had any idea who or what was causing the problems. It could have been a plague or disease going around but someone had a bright idea that a person could cause such destruction. The accused people could have been acting to scare people away that they didnt want in the town but no one really knew.

The women in The Crucible are i think motivated to accuse innocent people of doing unthinkable things because they do not like those certain people for some emotional reasons. When some one is mad at another person for any dumb reason it could be then they think of the dumbest solutions to get ride of their problem. I think these girls are going to far but the dislike of these other people must be a great motivation because the attention has gone over their heads.

The Motivation is confusion. these people fear what they dont understand and get rid of it the only way they know how. if somebody is different, accuse them of being a witch and they are gone. These girls are just taking this to the extreme and but a little act into it.

I think the motivation of people is simply lust and greed they want power and they have found that they can control others in their town and they want to have a better standing in a life that doesnt encorage advance ment in life.

I think that the characters in the crucible find their motivation in many ways. First off there is so much confusing and carzy things happening that people get motivated to start accusing one another even if they dont really have a good reason they just do it because they think it will help the situation at hand. the second way of motavation is that some certain people want to get rid of other people so they are taking advantage of the situation and using it to their best interest.

some of the motivation is to get out of trouble. abigail is trying not to be convicted of witchcraftery. john doesnt know what to do because if he tells the tuth than he will have to live with the consequences.

I think the motivation behind the characters may (while they are historical) maybe was motivated and in a sense based these characters after people he actually knew. I think The Crucible is an excellent example on peoples actions, and motivations, that still may happen today, if you disagree then you should watch people and how they react to someone they dont like when someone says something to them that they dont like, their reaction is something similar to accusations and saying things that condemns people in society.

Most of the motivation present in the crucible is the desire not to be accused by anyone in the community. People were being accused left and right, and what seemed like the only way to protect yourself was to accuse someone else. Atleast, that was Abigail's clear motivation. Proctor, however went on with his actions only in order to save his wife from the rope and to accuse Abigail for the lying girl that she was. He was motivated by good and that is what eventually got him killed.
