Yeah, I got game like Stuart Scott
Fresh out the ESPN shop

-3 Peat, Lil Wayne

This great example of slant rhyme, taken from the album "Tha Carter 3", exemplifies Wayne's ability to form rhymes using two words that sound fairly similar. The words "Scott" and "shop" sound close enough to one another that the song maintains its flow. Slant rhyme gives an author the ability to expand their rhyming possibilities immensely. Wayne, the self proclaimed "best rapper alive" utalizes slant rhyme in many of his songs to give his music a unique style that many have attempted to replicate.

"-Like a glacier melting watch me dissipate
-I searched for love in an empty world but all I found was hate"
-Rise Against

In the whole song it sounds a lot of rhyming adn that happens a lot in their songs. but in this song this line alone shows rhyme. OFr example: Dissipate:Hate.

"Every time I hit a track im like an energy pack, the instruments are crying out, where the sympathy at?"

-Weezy F Baby- Live from the 504

In this verse weezy demonstrates the use of a metaphor when he uses the word like to compare himself to an energy pack. A metaphor uses the word "like" or "as" to give a comparison and paint a picture. Wayne uses the word like and compares himself to an energy pack.

Gypsy Woman, by Hilary Duff, shows the redemption of a broken hearted daughter. To show her emotions, she uses a lot of metaphors, rhymes, and deeper meanings. For example the lyrics used are Enjoyed the fame, bringin’ down the family name/ She can swallow knives, she can swallow lives/ Gold and black stare brought the night of our demise/ She can rob you blind with just one look from those eyes/ Out of all the thieves that trained her/ None of them could tame her. These are powerful sayings to show her extreme hate for this bad time in her life.

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How evrything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.

-Stairway to heaven, Led Zeppelin

I chose this song because all of the lyrics have poetic qualities. For example the way they Show what they are trying to say instead of saying it. This song is a poem. Also it is one of the greatest songs of all time. What this song lacks in rhyming it more than makes up with alternate meanings, sensory , and metaphors.

All at once

"Looking for the right one you line up the world to find
Where no questions cross your mind
But she won't keep on waiting for you without a doubt
Much longer for you to sort it out"

-the Fray

This song quote exemplifies direct rhyme. Direct rhyme differs from indiret rhyme because direct rhyming words are much more alike and even usually spelled alike. Find rhymes directly with mind and doubt rhymes directly with out. Rhyming helps the fray to express creativity and style into their lyrics. This also help the song to flow smoothly and gently because the words are easier to predict and sound alike.

"Relying on rap, but in the kitchen I'm a chemist."

-Sky Is The Limit, Lil Wayne

This is great example of a metaphor. In this, Lil Wayne is comparing himself to a chemist when he is in the kitchen. In just a few short words, he creates a visual for the reader. It allows us to visualize Lil Wayne in his kitchen mixing different items, and experimenting with different concoctions.

There goes the sun, oceans away
And leaves the day for someone else
Honestly I thought that we could make it all the way,
Barefoot on beaches dancing against the gray.
-The Fray

This portion of the song "Oceans" by The Fray is a good example of direct rhyme because "away" and "way" sound the same and are spelled almost identically. The Fray uses this technique to make the song flow, and to make it easier for the listeners to understand so they can identify with the lyrics.

Hey you’re playing with my delirium
And the longer I wait the harder I’m gonna fall
Stop playing with my delirium
'Coz I’m outta my head and outta my self control

----My Delirium by Ladyhawke

This is an example of free verse. It doesn't rhyme and doesn't follow any poetry rules. But it does have a unique thing happen where when the listeners think that she;s going to say she's out of herself she instead she's out of her self control.

Squeaky swings and tall grass
The longest shadows ever cast
The water's warm and children swim
And we frolicked about in our summer skin

Death Cab for Cutie- “Summer Skin”

This song contains several examples of slant rhyme, so several words almost rhyme, but not quite. Words such as “grass” and “cast” sound similar but don’t quite rhyme, yet they sound like they rhyme when they are sung. Other words such as “swim” and “skin” demonstrate this as well.

"I opened up my eyes to see
A land of sunny rocks and funny trees
Yes I'm on the moon again
A heavy earth exchange a lighter breeze
Got no coat and got no money
A pair of shoes to last the rest of may
a crater for an outdoor pool
A couple cats to help me pass the day

Havin a good time,
Watchin the sun shine

From here i watch the world go by
Workin at the moontime bar and grille
Word from earth my time is up
But here upon the moon the time stands still
Got no telecomunications
Cables havent gotten out this way
The man in the moon is a musician
and thats the way we pass the lunar day

Havin a goodtime
Watchin the sun shine"
-Widespread Panic

This song is poetic because it not only has a deeper meaning but also has many elements of poetry. It has end rhyme and slant rhyme but it does not try to force words to rhyme. It also has varyation in stanza length and line length giving it a poetic feel. Also, the song uses descriptive words and phrases to paint a picture in the listeners mind. If you just read the song the rhythem of the song sounds poetic too.

all the men held tall with their
chests in the air, with courage in
their blood and a fire in their stare
is was a grey morning and they all
wondered how they would fare

- Dispatch, General

This song has a really good example of exact rhyme. Dispatch uses exact rhyme alot in theur songs to make the flow of the song much smoother and soothing to your ears but alot of times they also use indirect rhyme when the words only kind of sound alike. This also helps the flow of the song because no song that just constantly uses exact rhymes is very good. Their, stare, and fare are all examples of direct rhyme in the song General by Dispatch.

You know what I'm sayin'.
Stop lookin' at what you ain't got
and start bein' thankful for what you do got.

T.I. Live You Life

this song is different from a lot of rap songs in that in the lyrics there is little or no rhyme. this song is about living your life to the fullest and not worrying about what others have that you dont. althoth in this song there is one line that has alot of repitition. i feel that this song has a strong connection to alot of people and thats what makes it popular.

You got me tossin' and turnin' and can't sleep at night"..."This time please someone come and rescue me
'Cause you on my mind, it's got me losing it ('Cause you on my mind)
I'm lost, you got me lookin' for the rest of me
Love is testing me but still I'm losing it
This time please someone come and rescue me (someone come and rescue me)
'Cause you on my mind got me losing it
I'm lost, you got me looking for the rest of me,
Got the best of me, so now I'm losing it"

-Rihanna

In the song it is about a girl trying yo forget a boy like in most of the poems we have read so far. And how the girl's heart won't let her forget the boy.

And we've sent planes to kill them and some of them were children
But still we crumbling the building

Under god but we kill like the son of Sam

Stand Up
Flobots

These lyrics have both similes and metphors which helps the rhyme have more meaning a be more than just words. This song makes us step back not as individuals but as a nation and realize our decisions have consequences and we need to change. The lyrics along with the unique beat give the song a unique quality and music style.

"Tell the coppers ha ha ha ha you can't catch him you cant stop him."
Lil wayne - A milli

Most people are ignorant, and say that rap has not poetic qualities and is just someone talking and cussing into a microphone. I think this is a onomatopia because it shows how he is laughing and uses it as a sounds.

"I'm a monster in this game, like I am the Lochness,
My rhymes are nappy rooted, some verses gotta process,
The truth in this booth, ain't no doubt when I'm rappin',
If I say it I've either done it, or It's 'bout to happen"

-Stomp, Young Buck (Ludacris sings the verse)

================

In this piece Ludacris uses straight rhymes to create a song which flows beautifully. This rhyming really makes the artist be more creative in his writing. This shows originality to the listener. Another element of writing Ludacris uses is the use of a simile in the first line. This really shows to the listener the extent of what he is raping about. In this case you see that by monster he is equating himself to the lochness monster which people have talked about for a long time and is marveled at when people apparently see it. He uses other elements in his song but they could not be displayed due to innapropiate language. But in this part he uses personification to express how his contracts practice abstinence which are not characteristics of contracts but that of humans. Overall the verses many rappers use involve numerous elements of poetry.

"For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,

Let it be

The rhyme with "see" and "be" shows a poetic connection. The lyrics in this song are very deep and poetic and not like most of today's music. It has a deeper meaning than most and that is also poetic to me.

"Let the good times roll

Let the good times roll
Let them make you a clown

Let them leave you up in the air
Let them brush your rock n' roll hair!

--Let the good times roll(REALLY?)
BY THE CARS

Most of the lines in this song begin with "Let", to create rhyme and a repetitive melody. This song, like many others by the Cars, opts for lyrical simplicity to create a catchy tune, and simple message. The downside of simpleness in lyrics is that it restricts creativeness as far as actually communicating a profound message.

"...They'll search the buildings, collect gold fillings, wallets and rings..."

-Say Anything, Alive With the Glory of Love

This quotation is a good example of rhyme. The suffix __gs shows up frequently which would support my point. A rhyme is, 'identity in sound of some part, esp. the end, of words or lines of verse.' -Dictionary.com

Did I ever open up my heart,
And let you look inside?

-This One, Paul McCartney & Wings

This is an example of a metaphor, and it is a good example of showing the image, instead of telling. Instead of putting it in a simple or boring way, Paul McCartney uses the image of opening up a heart, and it is much more effective because it is more memorable, and it stands out more.

I picked the song "Where is the love" by Black Eyed Peas because it demonstrates rhyming, but also contains a slant rhyme at the very end of this chorus.
"People killing people dying
Children hurtin you hear them crying
Can you practice what you preach
Would you turn the other cheek?
Father Father Father help us
Send some guidance from above"

-Bring it on,by organized confusion

This quote is is a double simily which is a comparison using like or as. The use of these similies is to show how much better he is then others by compairing them to something easily eatin, cereal, and he doubles the dis by saying they are soggy cereal and makes himself super good by saying he has milky style like Mr. Meoggy, whoever that is.

This is an example of a metaphor as he compares himself to money by using the word like. Also it shows repetition because he uses the same starting words for each phrase that he compares himself to money.

Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2

I chose this song cause it has examples of rhyming, as well as an overall moving message about war and fighting. It sends a message of wanting to stop, and end the atrocities of war. U2 has always done a very good job of working in poetic lines and rhymes into their songs.
