Are You Motivated Too?

Based upon your own understanding and any studied background information regarding The Crucible, what motivation exists for some of the characters and the drama's author, Arthur Miller?

In the Crucible by Authur Miller, the movtive seemed to me, that the girls that were accusing thhose innocent people had something agaist them. which also made the town more a more curious and tence and scared as to who they thought was a witch was pretty retarted. for the unfair trials well that is another thing, why is it that if u dont say anything, u die, but if u say something , then u live...? why is it that it is always going to be a lose lose for the person? also i think that maybe the people that pretented to be bewitched only had a gudge agaisnt them b/c they thougth that they were be mistreated by the person they were accusing... which we all know could have been solved anothter way. also if the people had the sicknesses then why did nt the doctor try going back to the source of most problems liek food intake or something they touched?....

From what I know about "The Crucible", the girls who were having the halucinations and convulsions were said to be bewitched. The girls did not know any better than to believe that theory, because it was the only theory brought up. So they needed people to blame, so they pointed the finger at their enemies, or just people they disliked. They felt like they needed to put the blame on someone, or they would be blamed themselves.
As for the author, Author Miller, I am not so sure what his motives were. There are a few possibilities. He could have simply just been facinated by the Salem Witch Trials, or he could be using the story as sort of a metaphpore for the blacklisting going on in America at the time, when the government accused people of being Communist.

In the Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the motive was that people who were hallucinating and having convulsions needed someone to blame for their sickness. No one could figure out what was going on, so they chose the only way they knew, and started pointing fingers. The people who were blamed were stuck in a lose, lose situation. Either admit to being a witch and go against your own civilization, or say no and be hanged. As for the author, Arthur Miller, he was motivated to write this play because of what was going on in America during the time period. McCarthyism was present. Senator McCarthy had the power to stir fear among the people by accusing without proof, people who were communists. I think that Miller wrote about the Salem Witch Trials to actually show McCarthy what he sounded like accusing people at random.

In "The Crucible" the root motivation for all these characters seems to be an overwhelming feelings of fear. The girls obviously had at least one or two real convulsions but maybe these girls kept the act going for fear of death. When fear stikes a whole town there is no telling what the actions of the townspeople are gonna be out of self preservation. If a man thinks that wiches are gonna take over the town and the only way that he can stop it is by avoiding that person or by killing them. Then the man is going to either kill or ostrisize the person being accused.
The girls themselves may have started off of fear but once they realized how much influence that they actually have then it may have just sparked a power streak. The underlying driving reason why these people did such strange and barbarack things seemes to be a deep seated fear of evil and satan taing over the world.

The motivation for some of the characters is greed. The characters want land and to be free of persecution for it. Those characters are free of persecution but they should be riddled with guilt for what they did to innocent people.

In the Crucible by Author Miller i think the motivation that exists for some of the characters is not really greed so much as the fear of satan and him taking over the world. They lived by a forest that was said to be the last piece of satans entry into the world...and i believe Arthur Miller wanted to show the true Salem Witch Trials through this story.. he showed how when unusual things happened and there was no answer for them they blamed innocent people of witch craft and selling their souls to the devil. therefore either they gave up their dignity or they would be hung. i believe he was tracing this back to America and what state it was during this period.

In the story The Crucible the motivation for the author Arthur Miller is to tell the stories of the people who were killed because of ignorance. With all the different people being accused for supposive witchcraft I think the motivation for the characters was to blame it on someone else so that they would not look stupid by not knowing what was wrong with the people. They ended up killing thousands of people because of this and this caused Arthur Miller to write this drama and tell the stories of the innocently murdered people.

Miller's motivation for The Crucible seemed to come from Senator McCarthy's "Red Hunt", in which people were required to basically accuse friends of being involved in Communism. Miller saw the connection between the Red Hunts and the Salem witch trials, which required people to accuse their friends and neighbors of doing witchcraft. The motivation for the characters seemed to come from Miller's own life and the struggles he dealt with regarding his relationships with others. He read about John and Elizabeth Proctor, and how their marriage was tested because of an incident involving Abigail, the orphan they hired. The fact that Elizabeth and John had to overcome an obstacle in their marriage reminded Miller of his own marriage, and how it was struggling.

The motivation for the characters was, at least from my perspective, to put an end to their hallucinations. Even though they dramatized their actions in court, I believe they did it so that the people THEY thought were responsible would be sentenced to death so that they would not be harmed again. I believe that they truly believed someone was committing witchcraft against them. As for the author. I believe his motive was to show people what hysteria looks like and that they were not to far from it in their own time with the "red scare."

I think that the main motive for The Crucible was hatred and afraid. the people didn't know what to think when they heard that there were witches all around them and they probably thought that they would be "sucked in" also. the people that put the people being called witches on trial had hatred toward them and wanted them to evanescent; be gone. i wish that they had really known what was going on and that it wasn't that they were witches at all, just that they were sick and so then the innocent people wouldn't have had to admit to something they weren't.

From what my understanding of "The Crucible" was that the young girls expiriencing these halucinations did not understand that they were being bewitched by some "ghost". I have also heard that they were very well informed on what was "taking" over their bodies and that they were intentionally blaming their sensations on girls or men that were unpopular in the town. This answer seems more reasonable especially after what we read today in class. Abigaile was portrayed as very inocent when she was talking to the reverend but when she was alone with the other girls she told them not to say a word about what they were actually doing in the forest. And finally when she was talking to John Proctor she acted as if she were in love with him and told the other girls about how she wanted his wife dead so she could be with him. I believe that Abigaile is going to be one of the girls expiriencing the "halucinations" and blaming them on Proctor's wife so that she will get hung.

My impressions of the characters in The Crucible is that the girls were having the halucinations and they were looking for a scapegoat. They were scared at what was going on, and they wanted someone to put the blame on to make themselves feel better. Arthur Miller was motivated to write this play due to the events going on in America during this hectic time period. Everyone was looking for someone or something to throw under the bus to take the eyes off of themselves.

In the crucible by auther miller many things drive and motivate the charicters to do stupid crazy things. For parris i believe much of his motivation comes from fear and anger of a parent whose daughter had beem "bewhiched" for Abigale i think that she is gelious of elizibiths relationship with proctor and wants him. also i think if someone just straight didnt like someone else they would accuse them simply because it is basicly a automatic death sentance just for being accused. The girls i think may be faking it because they where maybe doing something else in the forest that they dont want people to know and they are just stupid.

I agree with everyone when they say that the girls in The Crucible were just trying to blame their sickness on the innocent people in Salem. Someone made up the theory that they were bewitched, the girls didn't know what to say it was so they went along with what everyone else said. It kind of seems like the characters want to stir up some drama; just like things now. Arthur Miller was making a symbolism to the times back then. People were being black-listed for supposedly being Communists. He was relating the two periods in time to each other. It would be very interesting to talk to Miller and see what his motive really was.

There are several different motivations for the different characters of the Crucible. But the main purpose of why this whole event happened in my opinion is that they had such stick rule about everything in Salem. This outbreak of accusing people was just the people of Salem finally choking up and getting out some of the things that they have always wanted to say and do. For example, the town was a Puritan town. Meaning that it had a very strict rules about what the people could say an do to each other and about any matter concerning any thing in the running of the town. So they accusing of anyone of being a which or having anything to do with witchcraft is there way of after all these years saying that they hate there neighbors and people around the town. It was also the towns way of explaining the unexplainable, that they really could not blame on G-d.

In the Crucible by Auther Miller, the motivation seemed to be fear. Finding out that their could be a possiblity that your community has so-called "witches," lead people to horrible things. With unsure facts and hullutionations of others lead to deaths of innocent people and tore everyone apart. Everything (including getting sick or being in the wrong place at the wrong time) could have lead to a persons death. Rather than doing the raitonal thing and being logical, they were just being judgemental and sensitive. Also, if they ever found someone that actually was a witch, wouldnt you be more afraid of thier vengance on you rather than them being around you? It seems that fear took over every thought made back then.

Some of the motivations in the Crucible are vengence, and desire. Abigail is taking vengence upon citizens she dislikes or who may have done something however big or small and retaliating. Also her desire to be with John Proctor also pushs her to get rid of his wife or atleast condemn her by calling her a witch.

In the Crucible written by Arthur Miller, the motivation in my opinion behind the charachters and more specifically the girls seems to be fear. Almost every women in Salem must have felt some type of fear because they could have been very easily accused of withcraft and put to death. The motive behind the whole town in general seems to be that they are paranoid. Everyone is so afraid that there is witchcraft going on in their perfect little town that they need to accuse everyone else of being a witch. So to simply answer the question, I would say that the main motivation of the charachters in this novel is fear and paranoya.

Based upon what I know from The Crucible I think that Abagail Williams represents the ideas of communism. When Arthur Miller wrote this it was during the time of McCarthyism when everyone in America was afraid that everyone was going to become communist. This play shows how the idea of a small group of people can easily influence the ideas of a larger group of people. The Crucible does an excellent job of showing us the readers of what to watch out for so that this kind of thing doesnt happen in our society.

My understanding is that when anything goes wrong with certain things, there always needs to be a scapegoat and there needs to be one fast, in the book " THE CRUCIBLE" the girls are said to be bewitched, so instead of coping with the fear, the entiretown got involved and filled everyones head with the fesar that they will become bewitched. well things can all possibly be solved in a much better way and a way that is easier, and calmer than involving the entire town.

In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, There are many motives for the characters for many different things. Salem is a town gone mad, and for that reason people will use anything and everything to get out of trouble. When accused of being a witch, one has two options, confess, go to church excessively and be alienated and ostracized from society for the rest of their lives, or, the person could not confess and be hung for lying. Once someone confessed to being a witch, they had to say who else they have seen with the 'devil' and give out names to save their own skin. They are alienated but they aren’t dead, and that is what matters. Arthur Miller could have written this as a metaphor for what was going wrong in America at the time. Segregation was very prominent at the time and this was a good example of showing people what they were doing to the African American's in the country. Everybody thought it was somewhat 'normal' until they look back on it. The Crucible was a different and somewhat effective way of bringing that to light.

In the crucible, to me, the motivation seemed to be the fact that the girls that were accusing all those innocent people obviously had something against them, but i also think they were trying to keep the town guessing ya know... but i also think they were just trying to stay out of trouble and just keep lying so no none would ever find out. I think that if you are lying to keep yourself out of trouble than it is really hard to stop because admitting to doing wrong is really hard so eventually your just in such a deep hole that you might as well keep going.

It seems like all the characters in the play have their own personal motive. The judge uses the situation to gain respect and recognition amongst his collies. Because of his pride, he sees himself as the cleanser of the town and hopes others in the surrounding towns well see him as this too. Abigale uses the trials to try to be with John. She accuses Goody Proctor of witch craft so she will be killed, allowing John and her to be together. Many of the other girls use this as an opportunity to get even on people the don't like, such as Rebecca Nurse.

In the Crucible there is a lot of people blaming other people for things that they cant explain. Everyone involved seems to have their own reason for why they are apart of it all. Abigail wants goody proctor gone because she wants to be with mr proctor. All the other girls i think are just afraid of abby and dont want to make her mad. All the blamed for witch craft are just trying to save themselves. Everyone gets sucked in to the drama of the town.

I think that every one had a different motive in the play for all of the things that they did. Abbys motivation to lie was fear of being whipped, and her "feelings" for Proctor. Then Proctors modivation for going to Salem was guilt, for getting his wife arrested, by sleeping with Abby. All of the girls that were apart of Abbys plans were motivated by the fear that Abby put them through. They all did different things for different reasons, but I think that the reason that all of the town believed all of the deception was that they believed that if they went after all of the witches that all of the bad things would stop happening. This is the modivation of hope, which unfortunatley lead to a lot of innocent people's deaths. Lastly I think that the author, Authur Miller, was motivated by the fact that all of these mistakes really happened and his opinion that people needed to know not to make the same mistakes as they did.
